Michael Roberts Must Grow In 2018 To See Play Time

Michael Roberts Is Looking To See The Field More Often In 2018.

Coming into the NFL as a fourth-round rookie, much wasn’t expected in tight end Michael Roberts. Former first-round pick Eric Ebron was the clear leader at the position, and veteran Darren Fells had the backup job locked up. The role of Roberts was to just sit back and learn for a majority of the season.

Roberts didn’t see much playing time, appearing in 15 games and starting in three, only having four catches for 46 yards. Roberts ended last season on a sour note, getting suspended for the week 17 game against the Green Bay Packers for oversleeping and missing team meetings. While this isn’t a huge red flag compared to breaking any laws, it still wasn’t a good thing for Roberts to do.

He should learn from his mistake and now with the starting tight end job up in the air, Roberts slipping up again could cost him it in the end, and he won’t want to make that mistake again if it will cost him his job.

Michael Roberts Headlines Tight End Group Overall

With Ebron and Fells gone, the only tight end with game experience in Detroit from last season is Roberts. Detroit did sign two free agent tight ends in Luke Wilson and Levine Toilolo. While both are stars, they could compete for the starting tight end job.

Wilson is more of a receiving tight end, while Toilolo is more of a blocking, Roberts can do both. Roberts knows the offense more than Wilson and Toilolo, so overall this is his job to lose in the end. Roberts has the skills to be a good starting tight end in the NFL, and with Wilson and Toilolo both only signing one-year contracts, it gives Roberts even more of a reason to prove his worth.

Roberts will have to showcase how much he has grown since last season, and while it mostly matters on the field, attending meetings and keeping a good sleep schedule should also be on his plate for the upcoming year.
