Colby Sorsdal makes the Detroit Lions 53-man roster as a reserve guard in Jeff Risdon’s current projection. His roster case centers on a cleaner guard fit, size and strength, and a depth chart that now places other tackles ahead of him. Spring reps and versatility keep him in the fight.
Is Colby Sorsdal on track to make the 53-man roster?
Yes, Jeff Risdon currently has Detroit Lions offensive lineman Colby Sorsdal on the final 53, in pencil, as a reserve interior option. As Jeff Risdon noted, Sorsdal drew meaningful spring reps and remains in the core group competing for backup jobs.
Risdon emphasized that Sorsdal missed last season after a preseason injury against Atlanta led to an injured reserve stint. The perception that he was gone lingered because of the waiver process, but he reverted and remained with Detroit. With renewed health and visible work in the spring, he reenters a crowded battle for reserve offensive line roles.
What role best fits Colby Sorsdal in Detroit?
Guard, not tackle. Sorsdal’s body type, power and grip strength translate inside, and the tackle depth ahead of him reduces the need to keep him outside.
As a rookie in 2023, Sorsdal played 94 snaps at left guard out of 253 total regular season snaps, the only regular season action of his career to date. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s staff has seen him at both guard spots, and his pass-protection challenges on the edge, specifically against quick inside counters that tested his foot reset and weight transfer, point to a cleaner projection at guard. The ask now is to channel his upper-body strength, anchor and hand usage in tighter spaces while sharpening the footwork that stalled him at right tackle.
How crowded is the Lions’ reserve offensive line competition?
Very crowded, and it shapes Sorsdal’s lane. Detroit Lions tackle Larry Borom upgrades the OT3 spot, Detroit Lions offensive tackle Blake Miller was drafted to play early, and Detroit Lions tackle Devin Cochran brings length. That stack narrows Sorsdal’s tackle path and pushes him to guard.
Inside, Detroit Lions interior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs is part of the mix, Detroit Lions offensive lineman Miles Frazier is being sorted among positions, and Detroit Lions center Seth McLaughlin is competing for depth. At left guard, Detroit Lions guard Christian Mahogany is the presumptive winner per Risdon, with Juice Scruggs his top challenger. Within that framework, Sorsdal’s clearest route is becoming the best reserve right guard who can also cover emergency snaps elsewhere.
What did Dan Campbell say about Sorsdal’s opportunity?
Dan Campbell underscored open competition and Sorsdal’s chance to earn it. Campbell said the staff’s eyes are open every year, Sorsdal is coming back from injury and doing a good job, and pads will tell more. He added that players get overlooked, then gain confidence, make plays and earn roles, and that Sorsdal has an opportunity.
That aligns with Risdon’s view: if the Detroit Lions keep him focused at one spot and he stacks solid padded practices and preseason tape, Sorsdal validates a reserve guard role on the 53.

Speaker 4: Hey, everyone. Jeff Rosen here with your daily DLP. Forgot to hit the, button that plays the, intro music. Buddy don't like it anyways, so you probably didn't miss it, but, threw my timing off a little bit. But let's get into it. We are continuing today with the theme of recently drafted players who are on the perceived Lions roster bubble as we enter training camp. And started the week with Giovanni Manu, who I do not have making the final 53. Moved into Emmis Raikstra, who I do have making the final 53 and could actually play a big role if he's healthy. Moved, to Wednesday's show was Dominic Lovett, and he faces a real uphill challenge to make it in a, weirdly crowded, competition for wide receiver five, wide receiver six, if they keep that many, and also on special teams. And today, we're going back a little bit further to the twenty twenty three draft. And this is where we get, fifth rounder. Let me pull them up here. One, Corby Sorsdol, who was spoiler alert. He was my inclusion sort of surprise inclusion on my initial 53 man roster projection. And a lot of people were like, he's still on the team? Really? And that's because he didn't play last year. He got hurt in the preseason game against Atlanta. I remember they did the hall of fame game. He got through that game okay. Played, right tackle, got rolled up on in the Atlanta game, and was placed on injury reserve. They actually waived him. He reverted off of waivers back to the lion's injury injured reserves. And it felt like when they waived him, everybody's like, oh, he's gone and never coming back again. Well, he's back. And in mini camp, he got a lot of reps ahead of some guys that you might not expect, and he is locked in in a battle for depth offensive line. He I don't think he's in the competition to to press as a starting potential left guard, although he has actually played a little bit of left guard in his Lions career. Just to go back in time, when he was a rookie, he played 94 snaps as a left guard in the regular season of his 253 total. That's back in 2023, and that is, to this point, the only time we've ever seen Corby Sorensdahl play in a regular season game. 2024? Nope. Last year, injured? So he's a bit of an unknown, but he does have some things that are going for him going forward. One of those is positional versatility. He has primarily played right tackle, but as a rookie, he did play both left guard and right guard. Well, guess who's not in Detroit anymore? They're I don't wanna say top, but he Coyote Oshika filled the role of utility reserve for a long time. Did okay at it. He was ahead of Sorsdell on the reps chart and the depth chart. He's gone. Now the Lions have brought in Juice Scruggs. They brought in Larry Boron as a tackle. And I think the days of Sorsal playing tackle are probably over.
Speaker 5: Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same. Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No. Just him. Now take Duracell. Is there any other battery with power boost ingredients inside? No. Just Duracell. Remember, GOATs only trust GOATs because they're built different, and Messi only trusts Duracell.
Speaker 6: This summer, serve up the cookout classics, Heinz ketchup and Kraft Singles. Every good burger needs a layer of perfectly melty cheese and thick rich ketchup. We all know it's not a cookout without Heinz and Kraft.
Speaker 4: With Borom there, with Devin Cochran in, Cochran offers more length. You know, drafting Blake Miller, obviously, he is projected to start sooner than later, if not week one. But Boron is a an upgrade at the o t three spot. So, you know, we're looking at realistically, now he's in the battle with a guy like Miles Frasier. I have Miles also making it. We still and this is one of the things that I had hoped to learn in minicamp and didn't, unfortunately. Still don't know where they see Miles Frazier. Is he a guard? Is he a tackle? Is he a center? Is he your Al Sheikah replacement? Where does Juice Scruggs fit in all this? Where does Seth McLaughlin fit in all this? There's a massive crowd battling for the reserve offensive line spots. And this is, by the way, presuming that Christian Mahogany and or Juice Scruggs are the left guard. And I think that that's a fairly safe presumption as we get closer to training camp. We don't know that yet. I am on record. I am still a believer that Christian Mahogany is going to win that job. I think he is healthy, and when healthy, he is the best candidate. And it's not to discount Scruggs specifically, who I think is his biggest challenger. But Sorsal doesn't really rip into that. And this is this is where it's tough for Sorsal. He's got good size. Has the size to play tackle or guard. He's six foot six, three hundred and fifteen pounds. Looked very, very built upper body this off season. He actually somewhat resembles Blake Miller. And if you don't know their numbers and you see them walking together, you're like, which one's which? Yeah. But, there's all the things that the lions liked about Sorsdell when they drafted him in the fifth round in 2023 are still kinda there. He has size. He does have strength. He has grip strength, very good grip strength. Again, we didn't really get to judge this much in mini camp because they're not in pads, and that's it makes offensive line and defensive line play awkward to evaluate. There there are certainly things you can pick up, and one of the things that you can pick up is footwork. And that has been where Sorel has struggled to stick with the lions. And when he did play as a rookie and when he did play in the preseasons before that, the 2024 pre season, his big issue at right tackle was that quick guys were too quick for him. He couldn't reset his feet. He couldn't get he could get depth to the outside to get the guys coming from the outside. But if they had quickness to cross him inside, his inside foot, he couldn't get his weight there fast enough. Saw that in training camps. A guy like, Isaac Ukwu gave him trouble. He's not with the lions anymore, but that's that's and that's why I do think he projects better at guard. Can he play center? I don't know. I don't know. I wanna bring up something that Dan Campbell said about him, though. And this was he he was asked about this in minicamp. And I'm gonna read from the the quote sheet here. Our eyes are open every year. Whether it's free agency or draft or any of these, you're acquiring competition. That's really what you're doing. You know? And then, obviously, the more that you invest in somebody, you're saying you feel like that's the guy who's probably gonna take that spot, but it's not a guarantee. So he's very much in that our eyes are open. He's coming back off that injury. He's doing a good job out there. There again, we're not in pads, but, hey. You know, we'll see. I mean, there's been guys in this league. It happens more than you would think that are overlooked or things happen or it's injury. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they just they start they get their confidence up. They start making plays, and they earn a role. They earn a spot. So our eyes are open. He's got an opportunity, end quote from head coach Dan Campbell there. And he's right. Sore still healthy. He's got a shot to battle. I do have him making the final 53. That is certainly in pencil, not in pen, not carved in marble, not tattooed on the back of your neck, nothing like that. But I do think that in general, the Lions media and fan base is sort of overlooking the option for him. He's gonna have to earn it. I do think that the fact that they did draft him and they have invested time in him, and he's out there again.

Speaker 4: I hope for his sake that they stick into one spot. Because I know we just talked I just spent eight minutes talking about his positional versatility and how he can play guard and play tackle. I think, weirdly enough, being better at one of those spots than any of the guys he's competing with is sort of source those ticket, whether it's right guard, whether it's left guard, whether it's being a backup, by the way. I I don't expect that he's gonna start, and I don't think that he's gonna be in that mix to start at left guard. But if he can be the best reserve right guard specifically, but then can also show you enough where you can keep him as a tackle if you're cutting Gio Manu and if you're letting Devin Cochran go, if Miles Frasier is playing at guard or somewhere in there. It it's a it's admittedly a crowded room. They might not even keep that many guys at all just because they're gonna have some of these people, including potentially Soresdale, on the practice squad as a weekly call up if they need it, the practice squad elevation. The math is gonna be very difficult for Sorsal, but I do see a path for him to make it. And I again, it it's gonna be about his footwork. He's given up some sacks. Just looking at at the from the 2024 preseason, gave up four three sacks in three games. Again, playing right tackle exclusively. We'll see on Sorstol, but, I don't think that they're as eager to give up on him as some might think they are. The fact that he's back, the fact that he he is certainly, like, one of the guys. And that was one of the things that I picked up on in mini camp. You know, he is he's not one of the the scragglers on the outside. He is in, like, walking with the core group. You know, the guys who are you expect to make the team, he's he's very much at home with those guys personality wise and comfort wise. And as Dan Campbell says, if he gets some confidence, if he makes a couple of plays, we'll see. So big, big preseason specifically for Corby so Colby Soresdahl. Easy for me to say. So I think they know what he's gonna do in camp. What can he do in the three preseason games when he gets a shot? Can he outshine somebody else? I'm hopeful that he can, but I'm not convinced that he can. But, that that's where we are with Colby. Cole Colby Soresdell. Gotta go back to my speech training when I was a kid. It's tough. That's, that's. Tomorrow's show, we are gonna deviate a little bit. We're not gonna be on the cut train or cut, not cut, bigs, make or break summer type theme. Have, we're gonna have Russ Brown from Bish and Brown Bish and Brown in need more coffee this morning. Oh, yeah. Sweet Java. Good stuff. Helps my brain go. Helps my tongue catch up to my brain. We're gonna tomorrow's show will be Russ. Have a show potentially for Saturday. We'll not have one on Sunday, and then we'll be back to a normal thing next week. I will be traveling this weekend. So Saturday's show may be short, might not happen at all depending on the Internet where I'm getting to. There's a chance I can record it early. If I do, I doubt I'll do that. But, that's where we're at. Potential live show next week. We will see if if Chris and I can hook up at the same time, being available. But thanks for liking and subscribing so you know when these things are coming at you, and you will stay abreast of when things are coming at you. But, that's our show for today, the Colby Sorestal episode. Jeff Friston signing out. Be good doing another, everybody.
