Daily DLP: 5 Top Grit Fit prospects to know – Detroit Lions Podcast

The Lions’ filters and a three-man target band at 17

One week from Day 3, the Detroit Lions board is narrowing to players who match clear standards. No recent DUIs. No violence. No academic ineligibility. They prefer team captains, academic achievers, and multi-sport backgrounds. Maturity and coachability matter. Under Brad Holmes, the Detroit Lions draft their guys and ignore consensus boards. Expect that again.

That approach frames a three-man cluster for pick No. 17 in the NFL Draft: TJ Parker, Blake Miller, and Kendrick Ford. Others could surface, including Monroe Fraley, Max Heinecker, and even Jermaine McCoy, but those three sit in the thick of it. The Detroit Lions Podcast made the case for each as culture and scheme fits.

Blake Miller checks every box at right tackle

Miller looks built for Detroit. Durable. Noticeable senior-year growth. Team captain. Strong football character. He can step in at right tackle quickly, as game ready as a college lineman can be entering the NFL. He also tested as an elite athlete at the combine. That level of testing did not always appear on tape, but nothing about him reads unathletic. Any narrative to the contrary is off base. If the Lions want a plug-in, long-view answer opposite Taylor Decker and in front of Aidan Hutchinson’s edge, Miller is the easy fit.

Why Faulk profiles as the Hutchinson complement

Some fans will balk at taking Faulk at 17. The fit is plain. He is a physical clone of Marcus Davenport, only younger and healthy. He became a team captain at age 20 on a veteran Auburn team. High academic achiever. Impressive athletic profile and RAS. The critique is real: he is not super twitchy off the snap, and quicker pressure has been a fan priority. The Detroit Lions have not emphasized that timeline publicly. They value the totality of disruption and reliability opposite Hutchinson. Within that lens, Faulk makes sense at 17.

Day-three watchlist: Kendrick Ford, Dante Corleone, and a sleeper at corner

Ford’s story fits Detroit. A blood clot cost him a season. He stayed loyal, stayed engaged on the sideline, and never detached. Two-time captain. Stylistic fit as a replacement for DJ Reed on the roster. Fourth-round range feels right given the board construction and need stack.

Dante Corleone also flashed a clear line to Allen Park. In an interview, he singled out the Detroit Lions as the only team that spent significant time with him after the combine visit. The club has done its homework. Everything about his profile suggests they will like what they see.

Do not sleep on Latrell McCutcheon, cornerback from the Houston Cougars. He has not been discussed enough. Good player. If Detroit wants a competitive outside corner later in the NFL Draft, he belongs on the card.

Speaker 3: Hey, everyone. Jeff Rizzo here. Billy DLP. It is Saturday. We are one week away from day three. My favorite day of the year. Alright. Let's get into it. Wanted to talk today about guys that I think that the lions are going to like more than other teams might might, whether you wanna call it a, you know, grit fit, just the way that, you know, that that they play, the type of person that they are. Because I do think that, there is sort of a pseudoscience to this in finding guys. Like, we have a pretty good understanding of what the lines are looking for in players on the field and off the field. You know, if you're if you've had a DUI recently, probably don't need to worry about being drafted by the Lions. If you've ever smacked a woman up, not coming to Detroit. You know, if you, academically ineligible, not gonna happen. Just just sorts of things off the field. They love team captains. They love academic achievers, guys who made all conference academically. They love guys who play multiple sports in high school, even if it's done. It doesn't have to be wrestling or basketball. It can be track. It can be water polo. Like, just to show that you're a more well rounded athlete. They wanna show they want you to show maturity. They want you to show, you know, responsibility. Coachability, I think, is a big thing as well. So I sifted through, and this is certainly not an exclusive list. There are many other guys, but I I wanted to spotlight five guys who fit the grit in my eyes. And I think that the Lions will rank them higher and potentially draft them higher than you might expect. And this is something that with Brad Holmes as our GM, we couldn't expect a little bit. You know, the, they take guys where they want to, and they don't really worry if that's higher than what the expectations are. They they don't care. There's so liberation in that. I admire that. I do. I really do. First up, you know what? I'm gonna start with two guys who I think are two of the three players that I expect will be the seventeenth pick. I have three names, and I've talked about it before on The Daily and other shows, that I think the Lions are going to come away at number 17 with drafting. That's TJ Parker, Blake Miller, and Keldrick Falk. Not an exclusive list. Like, there certainly, like, Monroe Freeling wouldn't surprise me at all. Max Heinecker wouldn't surprise me at all. Jermaine McCoy would surprise me a little, but not enough that it would register. You know, there are there are certainly other options. Blake Miller, though. My goodness. He's, like, exactly what the lions want in a player. Durable starter, Showed significant progress throughout his career. Got better his senior season. Team captain. Great citizen off the field. Just lauded for his football character. Good, good player. Can play right tackle right away. He's game ready as much as you can be coming out of college and and being into the NFL at 17. So he is certainly, like like, easy, easy, easy fit for the Lions. Eldred Falk. I know a lot of fans are not thrilled with the idea of the Lions taking him at 17. I respect that, and I understand it. But, guys, he is exactly what they have shown you they want opposite Aidan Hutchinson, because he is a physical clone of Marcus Davenport, except he's healthy. He's young. He was elected a team captain at age 20 on a veteran laden Auburn football team. That doesn't scream Detroit Lions interest. I don't know what does.

Speaker 3: High academic achiever in high school, athletic upside, high RAS score, very impressive athlete. Doesn't necessarily show on the field. And by the way, that that's true with Miller. Miller tested, like, elite as an athlete at the combine. That doesn't necessarily show on the field. Like, you wouldn't expect him to test the way he did, but you certainly wouldn't find him unathletic at all. I don't know where that narrative has gotten out there in Lions' Land, but it's it's it's it's not based in any sense of reality at all. And that's true with Faulk too. Now Faulk is not super twitchy off the snap, and that is a very viable criticism of him. I think in our world as Lions fans, and I will raise my hand here too, we would like for them to get pressure on the quarterback quicker. That's not necessarily what Faulk thrives at. However, the Lions have never really said that. They do wanna get quicker. But in terms of, like, getting quicker pressure, it's never been something that they've really talked a lot about or, like, sought. You know? The one guy that they've had that could do that in in the time that they've had since Dan has has been in charge of of the team was James Houston, and they got really tired of him other doing other things, other than rushing the passer. We're not not doing them more specifically. Falk's gonna be a tough sell for a lot of y'all, I get it. But if he's the pick at 17, don't be surprised because he is he is a massive grit fit for the Lions. Drop down a little bit. These are day two, guys, maybe day three. Day two, Vijay Payne, safety Kansas State. Profiled him not long ago, here on the show. Throw a picture of him up here. Starter, team captain, special teams captain can play free safety. He can play slot corner. He can play in the box a little bit. He's played all over the place. He's played on special teams. High character guy. Multi sport athlete. Really good player. Probably a now see, this is where the range gets into trouble, because he is generally projected as a third round pick. Lions don't have one of those. So it'll require some movement one way or the other to get pain, but he is the type of player like, honestly, he is a lot like Christian Izzie who they just signed. He could be a long term solution at that spot, that that versatility spot, and nice insurance against the, current injuries that we have at the safety position. So he certainly is a great fit. Another one, this is a guy, and I will credit Justin Mello, from SI, among other places where I've worked with Justin before, back at Draftwire, actually. He's he's very good resource, and he pointed out to me an interview that he did with this guy, Jake Corleone, the godfather defensive tackle Cincinnati Bearcats. He is another one. Like, his off field screams Detroit lion interest. Team captain, stayed loyal, had a bout of he hit a blood clot that, cost him a season. He fought through it, stayed loyal, stayed dedicated, was on the sidelines every time, was cheering his guys on even though he wasn't clear to play football. Stayed stayed very engaged with the team. Team captain, two times. Pretty good football player too. Good good stylistic fit as a replacement for DJ Reader on the roster. He's he would probably be one of your two fourth round picks, would be my guess. Just and and in Melo's, interview that they had with him that he had with with Dante. He singled out the Detroit Lions as a team that has, you know, been the only team that's really spent significant amount of time with him at the combine after the combine visit. You know, he's shows that the lions have done their homework on him, and everything that I have seen and heard of, Dante Corleone indicates that the lions will indeed like what they see in him. Then the last one, I'll bring him up, is a guy that doesn't get a lot of run. It hasn't been talked about a lot, and probably should. I got the picture up here for those of you that are watching on YouTube. Thank you. Thanks for liking and subscribing. It's the Daily DLP. Your Detroit Lions and Reddit connection. Gonna throw that in there. You know, like, who is this guy? Well, that is Latrell McCutcheon, quarterback, Houston Cougars. Good player. I forgot to mute my phone. That's a rookie mistake. Gray will flag me for that, deservedly so. My bad, guys. Back to Latrell McCutcheon. Starting out at Oklahoma, played one year there, played one year at USC. And I will bring him up because he is I'm cheating a little bit. He's the prospect of the day. Six foot one and three quarters, seven eighths, hundred ninety one pounds, RAS in the high nines, ran a four four one, has run above 22 miles an hour before. Optimal size for the lions. Now he transferred after one year at USC 2022, and he got screwed by the NCAA in the transfer process and was not given eligibility to play at Houston in 2023. There's a lot of different ways he could have gone with that. He chose to stick it out and fight. He was very much a part of the team even though he wasn't on the team. Again, dedication to football, football character. This guy's got it in droves, man. Willing run defender who sheds blocks well. He might be the best outside corner in this class at shedding blocks in the run game. He attacks. He's tackling is I didn't it wasn't it's not bad enough to put it in the cons, but I can see where people would be a little concerned by he gets a little overzealous and will overshoot the point of attack a little bit. He's in coverage too. Here's where the lions will also love him. Team captain, special teams standout as a gunner, and he blocked two field goals. This is your starting outside corner, and he's playing on your special teams units. Arguably the best player on Houston's defense, he's given it all on special teams. You damn well better believe the Lions noticed that. Now, comms. Finding the ball in the air remains a work in progress, and he has no he had no interceptions. He did deflect 10 passes this past season. I will tell you, I saw six of them in in watching the cougars, and at least two of them where the ball hit him. Like, he didn't like, well, he he was in such good position in coverage, but never got his head around with the ball hit him. Shades of Terry on Arnold. The Lions like that clearly. The other thing I would say, in in the run game, if you really wanna watch him, like, destroy the run, watch their game against Rice, which is a bit of a rivalry game. Like, the those schools are, you know, five miles apart. They don't like each other very much. He annihilated their options, and I like that. I I like the fact that he could probably do some things against the mobile quarterback there. Jam technique got better as a senior. They did they actually jammed more. They played they played him more in press, and it he wore it well. In zone, he's less instinctive. He's sort of like he's gonna he's gonna let the guy catch the ball and then hammer him down, which okay. As long as you don't give up the yak. I didn't see him give up much yak, so I'm I'm good with that. He's not super instinctive in coverage. He does play the receiver more than he plays the quarterback. That's one of the reasons why he doesn't get his hands on many balls, is because he is focused on the receiver, and some of that is because he doesn't have, like, I'll call him average instincts. They're not he's not like like, when you watch, DJ Reed, DJ Reed has ridiculously high coverage instincts. He knows what's coming before it happens. McCutchen's not that kind of guy, but certainly a guy that should interest the Lions in the fifth round, sixth round. I gave him a fourth round grade because I think the arrow was pointing up on him. And, I can see the lions liking him as well for all the things with the the football character that we talked about. So, again, to recap, five guys that I think that the lions are going to like higher than consensus and higher than other teams will. Blake Miller, Keldrick Falk, Vijay Payne, Latrell McCutcheon, and Dante Corleone. Don't be surprised if any or even all of those guys, wind up getting very significant interest and run with the Detroit Lions. That's it for today. My daughter's going to prom tonight, so I'm a little freaked out. So, hopefully, we will be able to have a show tomorrow when I will, still have some hair. We'll pull it all out. Jeff Risen signing out. Be good to one another, everybody.
