Jack Campbell got paid, and now the Detroit Lions have another premium contract on the books. Campbell becomes the 2nd-highest paid linebacker in the NFL in terms of average annual salary. That spawned a Daily DLP look at how some of the other top Lions talents rank in the NFL salary pantheon.
Quarterback Jared Goff sits seventh on the QB salary list, and that seems to fit with where Goff belongs. Amon-Ra St. Brown has gone from the top of the WR list to 8th in a little over two years with his $30.02 million per year average. Alim McNeill, Kerby Joseph and Penei Sewell all rank high, too.
A deeper look at all the premium contracts with Detroit’s elite talent shows a definite theme. Everyone is locked up through at least 2028. Many of the contracts are structured with the intention of the Lions and the key young talents working out another contract in either 2028 or 2029 to help make the giant balloon payments more manageable and spread out while also keeping the band together with eyes on a Super Bowl.

Speaker 4: Hey, everyone. Jefferson here with your daily DLP. You made it to Memorial Day weekend. Congratulations. It is Saturday, May 23. Technically, I'm recording this Friday night. It's Saturday morning when you're seeing this. Hopefully, it's catching you in a good spot. Hopefully, if you traveled, if you made it to where your destination is. I'm, out and about this weekend, so, you won't get anything from me on Sunday. We'll We'll get back at it on Monday. But I wanted to get into some of the contractual stuff because that came up a lot in the live session that I did on Thursday night after the Jack Campbell contract signing, and we have more details about Campbell's signing. He is the second highest paid linebacker in football with his $81,000,000 total value. 20,500,000 per year. It's actually 20,250,000 per year. Only Roquan Smith makes more total. Only Fred Warner at 21,000,000 per year makes more average per year. And that tends to be the measuring stick for contracts these days, more than the total value because, as we'll see as we go forward here, a lot of times the total value is just fluff. There's still some artificial sweetener in there that doesn't really factor in. So especially true with the lines and the void years, we'll get into that. But it's this is a deal for Jack Campbell. It's I've I've seen a lot of criticism of it of being above market. And I don't necessarily think it's above market. I think it's pushing above market, but this is a young guy. It's he's coming off of his first contract. First team all pro. One of the best at creating fumbles. We we we talked about, a while ago when the NFL came to Detroit last year with the officials in the preseason, and they showed us the videos. One of the videos was of Jack Campbell punching the ball out. Now, unfortunately, he had a couple of misses, and they've been explaining why that's gonna be a penalty now. But Jack's really good at that. He has steadily improved his game. There are some who will tell you that the the the tackles are overrated. Like, okay. That's nice to get a tackle instead of missing it. It's nice to be in position to make the tackle and actually do it. Sort of what a linebacker is for, especially in this defense. But okay. Whatever. Like, I I get that there are people that just don't watch a lot of Lions football and aren't excited by reliably steady a minus level play from Jack Campbell every snap of every game. You never see him have a bad snap. He might he might get beat in coverage. That's and that's really the only quibble that you could have with him. His instincts, his reactive quickness, his eyes for the ball, his strength, his ability to tackle, square people up without overshooting the point of attack. My god. That is a massive bugaboo for me. When I scout linebackers we'll we'll put the draft hat on for a second here. When I scout linebackers, one of my biggest pet peeves is guys who can't control themselves. They're at full speed. They're going into their their they get to the point of attack, and they can't control their body. And they missed the tackle because the El Matador passed or they get stiff armed and they're they're, you know, they're so stressed because of how physical exertion they are and then they lose their balance and lose their I hate that. I hate that in linebackers. One of the reasons why I like Jeff Campbell a lot. If you wanna go back in time, I was a massive Lance Briggs fan when he played for the Buccaneers and and then the Bears. Just an ideal guy who never missed the point of attack. It was always where he needed to be, reliably made plays, never ran himself out of the play. I love that in linebackers. Chris Spielman, the gold standard of that. Chris might not have been the fastest dude. He was fast enough, though. You never saw him, like, go to the wrong gap or get to the gap and then get pushed out of the way because he was out of control. He was losing his balance. He didn't have control of his legs, that sort of thing. Like, there's a lot of Jack Campbell in debt, and I love that. So somebody else will get paid more soon. That's the way it works. We'll see if his salary and the whole thing about the so they declined the fifth year option. And we talked about this. Frequent watchers, bear with me here. I'm gonna I'm gonna give this up to the new people. If I let you know, thank you for joining. We we do appreciate it. Oh, next little influx of of subscribers recently. Thank you for subscribing and liking. We'll get back to have a guest soon. I promise. I have a couple of them set up for next week. It'll be fun. One of them will be, something a little different that, I hope you like. But, the reason why the lions declined the fifth year option on Jack Campbell was because it would have cost over the amount of money that they're paying him per year because off ball linebackers get lumped in with pass rush linebackers, the Micah Parsons of the world. Believe it or not, Miles Garrett is actually in that grouping even though he's six foot four, two hundred and seventy eight pounds. Conceivably, Aidan Hutchinson could be listed as a linebacker and impact that. And when you average out the franchise tag value for a linebacker, that's where it goes. Now normally, the fifth year option is not the franchise tag value, but because Jack Campbell was a first team all pro, that's an escalator in it. There are a few of those. Jabir Gibbs had a little bit of an escalator in his because he had made Pro Bowls. That's that's that's nice what the NFL does. The NFL and the NFL PA worked that out. They got me thinking. Campbell's ranked second at line off ball linebacker. I wanted to take a look at where some of the other lions who have all of these except one. Two, actually, are homegrown lions. Guys drafted by this regime, by Brad Holmes, developed by Dan Campbell and staff. See where they rank. You know, we you know the names. You know these guys are stars. We'll start, though, with Jared Goff, who was, once upon a time, scouted by Brad Holmes as a member of the Rams staff, number one overall pick in the twenty sixteen NFL draft. Jared Goff makes $53,000,000 a year per average. That's his average salary per year. That's that's the metric of measurements here. That's the seventh highest for a quarterback. Now you might say, is Jared Goff the seventh best quarterback in football? Sometimes he is. Yeah. He's not far from it if he's not. He might not have the gaudiest way of producing it. If you look at his production numbers with this offense, the Jared Goff ends, it's top five every year. You don't get that if you don't have a top 10 quarterback. I know there's a lot of consternation out there about Jared Goff not being able to win. I don't really get that, but okay. He can't run. Bugger. Means he throws the ball to receivers that are very talented more. That's a trade off I'll take, ladies and gentlemen. Would I like it if he was more mobile and able to escape a pressure instead of doing his I will get so this is I actually like it when Jared Goff turfs the ball when the play isn't gonna work. I appreciate that. As somebody who covered Baker Mayfield, trust me, I appreciate that. Somebody who covered Matt Schaub at the end in Houston. Oh my god. I appreciate that. Good lord. Just don't try to throw. Get rid of it. Play it safe. Live for another down. Goff does very good at that. Would it be nice if he could move around a little bit, buy some more time, and maybe create some plays down the field when he's under pressure instead of doing that reflexive turf? Yeah. I would. That'd be great. I'd love it. It's not who he is. At this point, I don't think that's really gonna change. As you get older, you don't there's a point of diminishing returns with age and athleticism. That's just not who golf is. That's okay. Seventh highest paid quarterback. Pretty good. And just think, they got a couple other guys that are coming up. CJ Stroud's gonna get an extension. Is CJ Stroud better than Jared Goff? I don't think so. He certainly wasn't last year serving on the playoffs. Oh my god. There are times when he is. There are also times where crap, dude. What the hell? He'll bump Goff down. Bryce Young is gonna get an extension in a couple that will dwarf it. All those guys from the last couple drafts, at some point, believe it or not, Caleb Williams will make more money than Jared Goff when Gil signs his next contract even if he's only the fifteenth best quarterback. Y'all know it's Chicago. They finally got a quarterback that they think can do something. This is a team that once made Rick Grossman the fourth highest paid quarterback for a brief time. Mitchell Trubisky. I'll I'll pick yeah. You just wait a little bit. Now God's contract runs through the 2028 season. He will need a new contract in 2029. Now the reality is he will get a new contract before that. We're gonna get into an example of that, in a second here, but let's go to Ammar Raus Saint Brown. Signed his extension that pays him 30,020,000 per year. He signed it the day before the twenty twenty four NFL Draft in Detroit. And, I got the pleasure of going to a, charity event that he was holding, that was set up before he signed the contract and wound up being a open forum on the contract. That was a lot of fun. I went with Eric Woodyard from from ESPN there. I think John McArin was there. Who else was there? Somebody else was there. Went to Corey Woods, now that I think about it. One day. It's a good time. But he got the point zero two, so he would be the highest paid wide receiver in football. Two years later, he's eighth. That 30,020,000 that set the market, not even the top five anymore. He's eighth. His contract also expires functionally, in 2029. Ali McNeal, defensive tackle. He ranks seventh among defensive tackles at 24,250,000 per year as is the case with golf and Steve Brown. He will need a new contract. His contract is done in 2029. That's 2026, 2027, 2028. Those of you who like to look at windows, there's your window. Certainly, 2026, 2027. At least one of these guys, if not all of them, will have a new contract in 2028. That's just the way the business works. Let's go a little bit deeper here. Penay Sewell, second highest paid tackle in football at $28,000,000 per year. He is moving to the left side now. That contract's not gonna go up the next time he signs a new one. His contract is up in 2030.

Speaker 4: You can't believe you can get paid before then again. I talked about this a little bit on the live show on Thursday, but one of the ways that you can get more money available to you is by signing a contract extension with one of these guys that's due a massive payment in time. That's that's baked into all of this. That's the lion's play. That's one of the reasons why you sign younger guys to those deals that have the voyagers. I'm I'm gonna get to the voyagers with with our next player here, which is Aidan Hutchinson. I wanna bring his contract up. This is from, Over the Cap, which is my preferred, contract providing information thing. For those of you who either can't read this this fine print, and I'm searching desperately for my reading glasses right now so I can put them on. The audio only folks is gonna have to bear with me and then listen to this, and I'm old, guys. Sorry. It is what it is. He is at $45,000,000 per year, average contract value. He is the second highest paid. Third highest paid Edge, which launched it together, defensive end and outside linebacker. $180,000,000. Now look at that contract. His contract runs through 2030, but you will notice 2031, 2032, 2033, 2034, and 2035 are all already on the contract and has void years. What does that mean? Go over and look at the right side of the screen in the red print here. If you're watching on YouTube or Spotify, by the way, thank you. I appreciate that. See those meg those red numbers in the parentheses? First off, the the column on the left there is the dead money and the contract value, dead money and cash savings. The dead money. 71,000,000 this year, they cut it. Come on. But go to 2028. At that point, this is where the red values on the far column, cap savings for cutting him is actually that you would have to pay money to get rid of him if you wanted to. God knows why they would, but okay. But then that next year, '39 almost $40,000,000. 44,000,000 in 2029. 45,000,000, basically, in in 2030 '31. K. Guys, what does that mean? That's when the next contract extension is coming for Aiden Hutchinson. It also is an example of having all those void years at the beginning of the contract. When you sign it, all you can't you can't renegotiate this contract with all those voyages on it. You can't. You can convert some of the salary to bonus money or bonus money to salary rather to buy a little bit of cash. The only way you're gonna get more money and save a lot of money with Aidan Hutchinson is signing into a new extension that goes on beyond twenty twenty one or 2031 rather. That is the drawback for the void years at the top. But the plus side, it allows him to be the third highest paid edge, and economically so where it's designed where he will get another big contract in Detroit, presuming that he earns it. I think we all hope and pray and presume that he will because he's a fantastic player. But that's, that's an example of where you where where the the money goes weird. Let's bring up Kirby Joseph. Kirby. Look at my notes here. He is the second highest paid safety at 21,250,000 per year. What's significant about that number? I think that's the number that Jameer Gibbs is gonna get. 21, maybe 21.25, depending on if Pujan signs first. We talked about that a lot in this week. Kirby also has void years. Now I wanna read the the fine print here, and I really gotta have to to read or something, this one. And those of the people who are watching, I apologize. My eyes just aren't great. Because this is about how they can get out of it out of Kirby's contract with insurance guarantees. And I'm reading the contract notes part down here at the bottom, and you can't see my pen pointing at it. Anyhow, the contract is fully guaranteed at 24,380,000, received a 10.1 10,011,000 signing bonus, had it four option bonuses. This is what's important, folks. The option bonuses, 9,625,000 in 2026. That's already been exercised. He's getting that. 16,580,000 in 2027, 19,035,000 in 2028, and 23,905,000 in 2029. Guys, if the lions don't sign if they don't wanna pay those bonuses, they can get out of those. That's what you save if you get rid of Kirby Joseph because of his injuries. And we hope that that doesn't have to be the case. But that's your savings. That's where the difference between guaranteed money and option bonuses come in. And, look, there there are people who know the cap inside out better than I do, but that's the basics of it. There are intricacies there. Like, the the the bonus guarantees on the third it's either the third day or the fifth day of the contract year each year, which is usually, like, a week to two weeks after the Super Bowl, just before free agency starts. That's when those option bonuses have to get picked up, or or you can move on. That's that's the contract insurance on Kirby Joseph, who is still the second highest paid safety. And there's one guy who came from the outside, who is highly ranked in the salary well, sort of. Bring him up here. DJ Reed. His contract because I get a lot of things like, what what if he sucks again? My friend Jeff's very blunt. He did not like DJ Reed's first year. I like the first few games. I didn't like how he came back at the end after the hamstring injury. He wasn't the same dude. Wasn't worth the, the millions that he's getting here. He is the 20 what is it? Twenty second highest paid cornerback. He also has a lot of void years there. You'll see 2026. 2027 is a year. If they wanna get rid of DJ Reed, they can do it after this year. It'll cost them a little bit of money. One of the things that they can do there you see those option bonuses. I gotta break up the readers again. The option bonus is 2,729,000 per year. Again, if they decline that, they save that money, but you lose the player. You'll see his base salaries are ridiculously low in the first year and the last year. Now this year, he's a big hit this year. His base salary is basically $14,500,000 this year. Cap number is 17,867,000. You can't hear any DJ Reed this year. After this year, look at that contract. It cost them $11,000,000 and $100,000 to get 1,010,000. That's nothing. That's I wanna say it's a rounding error, but that's if you're done with DJ Reed after this year, if it just isn't working, okay. He move on. He's 30 years old, but if he plays well if he's the guy who was out there for the first four weeks last year before he pulled the hamstring, that guy can sign another contract, and that saves more money down the line. The other one is Jamieson Williams. Didn't print his contract sheet off. He is the sixteenth highest paid wide receiver right now at 26,670,000 per year. His contract, like Penay and Kirby, is done in 2030. Again, Windows. By 2029, all of the guys that I have mentioned will either be on another contract or not on the team. Sort of lumped the whole discussion about winning window and contracts, contract viability, contracts renegotiations, that kind of stuff. All gets lumped together. Guys, as you're watching this, I'm gonna be sitting well, if you're watching it Saturday morning, I'll be sitting in the rain in Muskegon. If you happen to be in Muskegon this weekend, come out to the beach. I'll be there. My daughter's playing the beach volleyball tournament. I'll be out there. I'm conspicuous. I'm obnoxious. I have a lot of fun. Great time. I'll be by the deck. Love that place. Please, please, please be safe out there. Memorial Day weekend is when a lot of people who don't normally drink have a couple, and they don't realize, maybe, that they shouldn't be behind the wheel. So please be careful. Be vigilant. If you have a drink, please don't drive. Please. It's important to me. It's important to everybody. As, somebody who has had a couple of people who I am very close to lose people that they love to the drunk drivers in the not too distant past. It's, please be careful out there. Please be responsible if you can. You can have a good time. I will. But, yeah. And, also, wearing the hat from American Dunes, Memorial Day, it means something. Honor and respect those that passed serving for our country. No matter what you think about our country and where it's at right now, there's varying opinions all over the place on that. Memorial Day is a time to remember folks who did their civic duty and served served with honor and died defending our country that allows me to do this, that allows you to do what you're doing. And you can take a little bit of time out of your day. Tip your camp to them. Thank you. Jefferson signing out. Be good to one another, everybody.
