Rams Go All-In With Miles Garrett
The Los Angeles Rams just reset the NFL conversation. They added Miles Garrett, called the best football player on the planet regardless of position. He is 30. He even set an NFL record last season. It is a thunderclap move that signals urgency right now.
Detroit Lions fans feel that jolt. They want the same message. Push for the trophy today. The Lions have not thrown caution aside. They have also not stood still. The context matters. Splash does not always equal rings.
How It Frames the Detroit Lions
The comparison that landed hardest came from basketball. The Lakers once stacked Karl Malone and Gary Payton onto a roster with Shaq and Kobe. Detroit Pistons beat them four games to one. Age and cohesion mattered more than headlines. There is a fair echo with Matthew Stafford’s stage and a superstar at 30 who might be past peak. Still great. Still terrifying. But time is undefeated.
Another parallel came from hockey. The New York Rangers added Wayne Gretzky to a lineup with Mark Messier, Luke Robitaille, Brian Leech, and Mike Richter. The stars were brilliant. Depth cracked. They ran into Eric Lindros and the Flyers and got bounced after two rounds. The Flyers later lost to the Red Wings in the Final. The lesson is simple. Depth, health, and timing beat posters on the wall.
Detroit’s Front Office Note
One more thread touched the Lions directly. Detroit hired Chris Grey. He is not the Lions’ GM. The hire stirred reactions, especially from Miami. The show kept it in perspective. Roles matter. Structure matters. The decision does not change who runs football operations in Detroit.
Early Odds Put Detroit In a Crowded Tier
Markets moved fast. As of last night, DraftKings listed the Rams at +550 to win the Super Bowl. That is the best number on the board. The next team sat at +750. The Detroit Lions fell into a second cluster with the Broncos, Packers, and Texans between +1700 and +1900. That is respect without coronation. It reflects belief in Detroit’s build and skepticism about any team in June.
The Detroit Lions Podcast cut through the noise. Garrett to the Rams is massive. It does not end the season. Detroit’s path is still clear. Keep stacking depth. Stay healthy. Peak late. The slogans will not decide it. Snap counts and solutions will. The NFL rewards teams that can win ugly in January. That is still the target in Detroit.

Speaker 2: Hey, everyone. Jeff Risen here with your daily DLP. We have made it to Thursday. It is June 4. Good morning for those of you who are watching as this gets posted. It's, currently 08:11AM as I start recording this. Wanted to make sure that no breaking news was happening, because yesterday I sat down to do this very episode talking about, the Los Angeles Rams and them being the favorites and what that means for the lions and what that means for the league as a whole. And as I was outlining it, we got the interesting news bomb that, the lions had hired Chris Greer. That was yesterday's show. You can check that out in the archives. Thanks for the guys who watched it yesterday. Appreciate that. It was my sort of honest in the moment reaction to it. A lot of people have a lot of feelings about Chris Greer. Most people from Miami are still laughing at Detroit. That that's okay. I took a look at the little ESPN, FBI power rankings, and, guess who's last? Hi, Miami. Look. You you understand where you're at. Greer was not a very good GM over time, but he's not the Lions' GM. We talked about that as as yesterday's show. Let's move on to today, where Lions fans have been gripping and hand wringing over the Rams acquiring Miles Garrett, who, it says here, is the best football player on the planet regardless of position. I will not hide my admiration for Miles Garrett. I think he's a fantastic football player. I think it's a a good, good acquisition. It sends the message for the Rams, a message that a lot of lions fans would like the lions to send, that they're not afraid to put every put all their chips in the middle of the table and go try to win it. Win this one. Lions haven't really done that. They haven't not done that either. I think that's important. But, you know so one of the things that came up and this came up, courtesy of Mike Hodges, who's been a longtime supporter of mine, longtime Patreon Slack member, and he put it in the Slack the other day, because he said that the the Garrett acquisition reminded him of when the Los Angeles Lakers added Karl Malone. They also added Gary Payton that off season to a team that already had Shaq and Kobe and other recognizable names. And at that point in that off season, I mean, people were like, where can I order my Lakers championship T shirts? Like, I wanna get mine already just to make sure that I've got one. Well, wanna be a pretty good team, but, team from Detroit have the other ideas. By the way, that Pistons team that won the title four games to one over those Lakers that had four future hall of famers on it at various stages of their careers at that point. Peyton and Malone were at the very end. I think that's a fair parallel with Matthew Stafford. Not gonna say that Myles Garrett at 30 in the physical condition that he's in is done, but I would I look. Even as a fanboy of Myles Garrett, I'm gonna say he's probably past his peak even though he did set the NFL record for sacks in the season last year with the Steelers basically throwing a football game, trying not to have him not get the record. Yeah. You know, they've done a lot of moves this off season, but those Pistons understood how to play together. They, took down they got hot late in the season. An older Lakers team that had to fight a little bit in the playoffs got to the championship game championships, and they weren't ready. Pistons took them in five. That kind of stuff happens. It reminded me, going back in time a little bit, thirty years to be exact, of when the New York Rangers who had won the Stanley Cup in 1994 to great acclaim, those of you who were alive then and paid attention to hockey understood, you know, nobody will ever forget the iconic picture of Marc Messier holding the cup over his head. Like, Messier was still there. They had Luc Robitaille. They had Brian Leech. They had imported Samuelson. Lot of really good players. They had Bruce Driver, one of the best second pairing defenseman of his era. Great power play quarterback out there. And that team added Wayne Gretzky. Yeah. The great one. Even those of you who are like, hockey? Is that is that the thing they play on skates? Like, y'all know who Wayne Gretzky hits. Yeah. The great one. And just to refresh back in time, so this also ties in with Detroit sports.

Speaker 2: That team got old quickly. Mike Richter in between the pipes was another one. Great player, representing the country, was Olympic team goalie in that past Olympics. Didn't work. Didn't wasn't wasn't Gretzky's fault, but one of the problems that that team had was that after their first line, and they had a good checking line then too, but their second line, their fourth line, their defensive depth, their goalie depth. It just wasn't up to snuff. They got through the first two rounds of the postseason, and then they ran into Eric Lindros and the Flyers, and they blasted those Rangers. Now you might recall, those flyers went on to the Stanley Cup finals and lost to the Red Wings, who had beaten the reigning defending champion, Avalanche, in the Western Conference finals that year. The point is there are a lot of times where teams make bold all in type acquisitions where it looks like, holy crap, who's gonna beat these guys? Happens in every sport. Remember the Eagles team a few years ago? That added oh god. Every everybody that you could want in the off season, they they were reigning champions of the off season. They didn't even make the playoffs. This is going back a ways. It got me thinking. What teams were the preseason favorites? Preseason odds favorites? Because the odds have adjusted recently. The Rams are now clearly the Super Bowl favorites for this year. As of last night at DraftKings, they were plus five fifty to win. That's the best in in the league. The Ravens were next at seven fifty. The lions are tied, and they're in a group with the Broncos, Packers, and Texans in between seventeen hundred and nineteen hundred, and those odds have shifted from last night to this morning. So just consider them in that tier that is, like, sixth through twelfth in the league. And and and the lines are towards the bottom end of that that range of teams, being favorable, which I personally think is lowballing. I think if you're a gambler, that's that's value. But gamble responsibly. Don't bet anything you can't afford to lose. Very sage advice. So I looked up and I asked Sumer Sports, Sumer Brain, which is for my money the best football AI product out there. It's a free plug for y'all at Sumer. They do very interesting work there. Some of it is very nerdy. Some of it is stuff that most people don't care about, but I thought this was cool. So I asked Sumer Brain, give me the preseason odds favorites to win the Super Bowl and then how they fared. And I've got the screen up here for those of you watching on YouTube. Thank you for liking and subscribing. I'm gonna get the reading glasses out. Y'all know the chore here. Need to be a man of a certain age and, like Dan Campbell, I have to wear those reading glasses. So let's just go back. We'll start last year. The Baltimore Ravens were plus 700. They finished eleven and six, and they lost in the divisional round. Eagles, the year before that, remember this is 2024. This is the year where the lions went fifteen and two, were the best team in football in the regular season and lost to Washington. Still pisses me off. Oh, it could have been. But they went up ten and seven, lost in the wild card round. The Chiefs, the year before, plus 600, lost in the divisional round. Now the year before that, Chiefs, plus 600, they won that Super Bowl. Couple of them to look at here. Chiefs before that lost the AFC championship game. In 2020, the New England Patriots were the odds on favorite going into the preseason. This is before the preseason starts. That's that was the the terms that I specified. They were plus 400. That's ridiculously short odds. Some of the shortest odds you will see on this entire page. They didn't make the playoffs. We all know why. Some of these other ones, though. I mean, some some did win the Super Bowl. The patriots a couple years before that at plus 600. Twenty seventeen ones. No. All these teams that were by the way, the, the Patriots that went six that went unbeaten were not the preseason odds on favorites to win that Super Bowl. Just crazy how these things happen. So there's a lot of teams that did win the Super Bowl. The Colts back in 2006. This goes back to 1995. 1999 Green Bay Packers finished eight and eight. They were plus 400 to win the the Super Bowl that year. They missed the playoffs. The Jaguars. Oh my goodness. The Jacksonville Jaguars were once the preseason odds on favorite team to win the Super Bowl. I laugh. You notice you don't see the Detroit Lions listed here anywhere. I mean, they've at least got that going for them. But those Jaguars finished with a losing record and missed the playoffs. They were seven and nine. I wanna say that that was Marc Brunel. I I wanna say he got hurt that year or something happened that year. But the broader point here, you can you can certainly respect the Rams. I absolutely do. They are the best team in football right now. They have the best roster. Like, no I don't have a problem saying that. Best team doesn't always win. Go back to the 2024 lions. Best team in football in the regular season. Number one seed, fifteen and two, buy first round. Couldn't win a playoff game.

Speaker 2: Football is an any given Sunday type of game. You don't have to be the better team overall. You have to be the better team that day. This Rams team is very good. No doubt about it. So are the Lions. So are by the way, so are other teams. I think the Patriots are pretty good. I think the Chiefs will be good. I think the, I think the Broncos are good. I think the Seahawks, the reigning champs. I always short shift them, and I don't mean to, but they're actually a good example of a team. We've talked about this before. The 2026 lions are poised to do exactly what the twenty twenty twenty what the 2025 seahawks did. Finished with a winning record, but missed the postseason the year before, thanks to some injuries and disappointing performances from a couple of stars, and then they went and won the Super Bowl. These lions can absolutely do that. There's zero doubt in my mind that they can do it. Will they? I don't know. I sure as hell hope so. There are too many examples to give. Again, just look at that sheet from from Sumer Brain. Giving you examples of other sports too. I wanna look at the Rams roster. This is from r lads where, I'm a frequent guest, on their things. Let me close their ads up. This is the Rams depth chart, and, again, this is one of those where you're gonna wanna look at it. This is a visual type show today. And you look at the names on their first line, and this is, you know, their offense. They do base. By the way, RLS does a really good job of breaking down the depth charts. They do update these very regularly. It's not done with AI either. They actually have scouts and people to do this. Davante Adams, Puka Nakua. Jordan Whittington, not not a not a bad player at all being your your slot. That offensive line, Alrick Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton. Okay. Kevin Dotson, Warren McClendon. Guys, if that offensive line was in Detroit, would you be happy with it? Would you? Their backups, Beau Limmer, David Casenberry. I can't believe there's a Casenberry still around. They're forever. Who's their number four wide receiver if one of those guys gets hurt? If Puka gets hurt, if Devante gets hurt? By the way, Devante's getting old. Canada Mumfield, CJ Daniels? Those guys on this depth chart, again, some of these guys are gonna make a team and there's chances for them to make changes, but just look at the overall depth on this team. Now they're good at tight end. They're very good at tight end. Suspect you'll see more of them playing more 12 personnel, maybe even some 13 personnel. Kyron Williams, Blake Corum. Okay. Good one two punch. Not as good as Detroit's, but they're they're good. Go to the defensive side. This is the fun one. You add Miles Garrett in there. Holy crap. Puna four, Braden Fiske, Kobe Turner. Like, that's a really good front three. Really good front three. You're putting Miles Garrett on one side. Byron Young, who's an underappreciated player on the other. Look at their linebackers, though. Nate Laman. Okay. Quality player. Omar Spates. Either one of those guys gets hurt, guess who's the next man up? Grant Stewart. Just look at the names at at line two of their depth chart. A lot of people are gonna be like, who the hell's that? That guy's still alive, let alone in the NFL? Like, there's a lot of that here. No. They have some bit like I don't hate that Josiah Stewart is their number three pass rusher. Like, okay. You can you can work with that. But as an older team, you know, a lot of these guys are, especially on the offensive side, are getting up there. As an older team, as what happened with the those Rangers. By the way, what happened with those Packers back in the day, 1999, that missed the playoffs? It's a long season when you're older and you don't have depth. And I just showed you their depth chart. I think you would probably agree with me that the Rams' depth outside of a couple of spots is but that sounded terrible on the audio only version. My apologies.
Speaker 6: Tomorrow morning is knocking. Stock your fridge now. How about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink or a sweet vanilla? Smooth caramel maybe or white chocolate mocha. Whichever you choose, delicious coffee awaits. Find Starbucks frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries.
Speaker 2: They're very good. Again, they should be expected to I have zero problem with anybody who expects the Los Angeles Rams to go win the Super Bowl this year. That's what they're trying to do. They've that's that's their bold message. They've done it. And I talked about this the other day when when that trade happened. I have a great appreciation for a team that is willing to go all in and acquire a big name star player. Got an example from the NBA this year, though, one that hurts me personally. I'm a Cleveland Cavaliers fan. They made a deal to add James Harden. And while that made them, at times, ridiculously good on offense first off, he annoyed me. His play annoys me. He's a great player, but he annoys me. I just don't like him. Sorry. How'd that work? They got past the Pistons who don't have enough scoring punch. It's just as a side note. This is just the Pistons could absolutely use James Harden. I know nobody wants to hear that. But a player who can light it up like that, if he would be willing to accept being the new version of Vinnie the Mike Wade Johnson, like, I don't know if he would, and he's 37. Like, anyhow, adding superstars doesn't always equate. They very well might for the for the Rams. That's a good football team. Again, doesn't mean they're gonna win it. I it frustrates me that so many Lions fans and certain members of the Lions media have already conceded the season. It's not how this works. It's not how sports work. One of the reasons that we love sports as a society and as a humankind is anything can happen. Sometimes sometimes the the heavy favorite does wind up going out and winning. My favorite photo sports photo second favorite. My favorite sports photo is the one of, oh god, the quarterback in the end zone at the end of his career in the Ramsgate appointment. Everything is just like yeah. Oh my god. I'm blanking on his name. People in the comments help me out. Thank you. But the other one is Secretariat in Belmont, I believe it is. I'm not a horse racing guy at all, but the picture of the jockey looking back over his shoulder, and there's no other horse, like, within 25 lengths of him. Sometimes the dominant does happen, and sometimes you appreciate that. Sometimes the inevitable doesn't wind up being inevitable. Patriots fans know a lot about that. So give the Rams their respect. They've earned it. They've bought it. They deserve it. That doesn't mean that other teams don't have a chance, including the Lions. And if these lions play to their potential and stay healthy, they can beat anybody in any stadium anywhere. I absolutely believe that. I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it. Again, there's things good things have to happen. Gotta stay healthy. But this Lions team has the personnel to compete with anyone. They didn't need to add Miles Garrett to be an elite team. They didn't. They got Aidan Hutchinson. All the weapons on offense. You know, Hamlin Russi Brown, Sam Laporta, Jahmier Gibbs, Jameson Williams, Isaac Tislaw looking buff this offseason. Lions should be better. Line can't be worse. Can't be. Jared Goff master controls. We forget the Jared Goff. Jared Goff. Jared Goff. Chance at random sporting events. Hell, we heard it once at the 16th Street Meyer here in Holliday. Spontaneous Jared Goff chant broke out because some dude was wearing a Jared Goff jersey in the bat section. I kid you not that happened. Yeah. If you wanna throw in the towel now, that's your choice. You're just telling you right now if that if that's your attitude, you're probably not gonna like this podcast for the next few months. Yeah. So we'll call it a show with that. Thank you for twenty five minutes of your time today. We will be back tomorrow. I have a guest. We are gonna record early morning. We will get the show up probably around noon. We are gonna talk about the trade process, as it pertained to the Browns, but also if the lions were involved and what could have been involved and other little things like that, with with a dear old friend of mine, who I've known and worked with for a long time. I think you'll like that one. This weekend, we will probably have shows both Saturday and Sunday. We'll see. I don't know. It's still Thursday morning. A lot of things can happen. I could get invited on a golf outing. That'd be nice. Great day to go hit them. It's it's a great day. I'm actually, heading out in the kayak today. It's a beautiful day here in West Michigan. Hopefully, you can get outside and enjoy some nice weather as well. I tend to like it hot. Those of you who are like me like that, today is your day. Jeff Risen signing out. Be good to one another, everybody.
