Speaker 4: Hey, everyone. Jeff Rosen here with your daily DLP. It is Saturday, June 13. You made it to the weekend. Congratulations. Get a more, specified show today because, a couple things, have come up this week that I think deserve a little bit of attention, so we're gonna talk about them. First, Frank Ragnow. At his annual, Skeet Showdown charity event in Detroit, he spoke with reporters, and it was it was good to hear from Frank. It's good to, you know, know that he's doing okay. But there were a couple of things that came out in the questions, with Ragnow, who, as we know, retired a little after this time last year, putting the Lions in a bit of a bind. After missing OTAs, debating retirement, he did in fact retire before training camp, and that, set forth set forth a series of events that, we don't like to remember, frankly, because the, the offensive line wasn't what it had been, in previous years under Dan Campbell and Hank Fraley as the offensive line coach. And we are desperately trying to get back to that, and I think we have. I I think well, I should say, we gotta see it first. But I like the acquisition of Cade Mays. I think he's going to be a big, big upgrade over Grand Blasgow in the pivot. Tate Rallidge in the second year, you know, I I think is is look. He had the training wheels with him last year of having Pene Sewell to his right side. Hopefully, and I'm pretty confident in saying it. I don't think he needs them anymore. I think he proved beyond beyond a reasonable doubt that he can play, without Panay next to him. But, you know, you'll see. Left guard was you know, we're gonna talk about that throughout the summer because that's pretty much the only open position on the offense. It's really the starting position. You know, it we haven't done one of these yet, but at at some point soon, we will do a 53 man roster projection. And, like, the offense, especially after Kendrick Law's injury, like, it's pretty easy to see, like, if they're keeping 25 on offense, like, you can you, you watching on YouTube, you listening on Spotify, by the way, thank you for that, You can probably name 23 of them like like that, rat a tat tat right off the bat. Well, that that came out more awkward than I wanted it to. I need more coffee this morning. By the way, those of you who are watching on YouTube will note, I'm in direct sun, and the shades that are directly in front of me don't always block it out. So I'm gonna look a little funky. It's okay, when I record at this time of day. That's what happens in the, the new home office here. I've changed things around a little bit. So I apologize for that for my chin being in the sun and my forehead not. Just just the way it goes. Back to rag now. One of the quotes, and I'll pull this up. And this is from Dave Burkett, from the Free Press. Dave was among the many media members there. I was not there. I couldn't make across the state for that. So, to shoot it to you straight, I was trying to will myself to play. I was, Ragnall said, and this is this is Frank talking about his abortive comeback, right around Thanksgiving last year, where he, you know, he he got guilty, you know, and and he talked about that. And my body was telling me otherwise, and I was just, like, in paralysis, if you will. I did not plan on retiring in the middle of the summer, believe it or not. It was like I was trying to get, like, you can do it for the guys, for the fans. It's who you are. But it's just like I was uncomfortable, and it's one of those things where you have a couple of kids, and I don't want a sob story. I'm okay. I'm going to be completely fine and everything. But it's one of those things like, I don't know. Is the juice worth the squeeze thing? And to me, it ultimately came down to that decision. There's a board of comeback later on. He talked about having a grade three hamstring tear that he didn't know about, was worse than he thought it was. That there is one thing that did come up, and I wanna bring this up. And this is from, John Macaroon at Detroit Lions on SI because, he quoted, about one of the things that we've talked about on this show and throughout the the DLP live shows with Chris and Gray, who's coming back very shortly. He's, finally done with his cross country track. Look forward to getting Gray back on here more. But he was talking about how the Lions came after him for returning some of the bonus. And this was a point of contention with a lot of fans and, obviously, with Rag now, although he did try to downplay it here. Said, I guess that's a tough question to answer. I'd say, obviously, the report's out there, whatever, Ragnall said. I don't know why they leaked it, but that's on them. I am trying to be a positive glass half full, whatever you say. There are so many I'm a people person. There's so many great people in that facility and on that team, and I've got nothing but love and respect, and I'm rooting for all of them. That to me to me, sounds like Frank is trying to make peace. Because I will tell you that his comeback, when he talked about how he felt bad for he wanted to be out there for his guys and had guilt about not being there for golf while he was getting sacked a lot and all that.

Speaker 5: This is going to be an extremely busy month. I have to watch a 104 soccer games, follow the pregame, the postgame, yell useless opinions at the TV. It's a lot. And, I don't know if that's what he's doing or not, but it's it's still it's it's nice that he's, you know, acknowledging, you know, that it that it wasn't great, that it wasn't something that he really wanted to get out there, but also that he's still a fan, and he's still rooting for his guys. Look, they he went through a ton with this team. He just turned 30, by the way. Feels like he'd be older than that, doesn't it? Anyhow, he also, put to bed any indication that he might wanna try to come back again. And I do get asked that question from that time to time. It tends to pop up in the Facebook comments. But, I wanted to do one other thing because the headlines that came out yesterday and you can tell the more traditional, vested news sources. I just wanna read some of the headlines that are there. Prior to Detroit, Frank Ragnow opens up about retirement attempt at comeback from Free Press, Frank Ragnau talks about retirement from Detroit Lions for the first time. ESPN, Frank Ragnau reflects on abrupt retirement, Lions' retirement, aborted return. And then you get to the more, Internet based, exclusively, click baity type things. This is from something called Clutch Sports. Frank Ragnow, he's 100% real on shocking lions, 2425 retirement. There's there's just so many, like Frank Ragnow slams lions for asking money back. That's I read you the quote. That's that's not what happened. I'm not saying this because I work with these people, but try to reward the more the integrity headlines instead of the click baity ones. I'll be straight. Some of these that I'm looking at here, like, they're clearly not written by humans. And that is something that I do take a lot of umbrage with when people are trying to pass off, you know, their last word or whatever as being authentic. Like, you didn't write that. Some might have wrote it. I don't know. But try to seek out the more established and, reputable outlets, sources. And I, you know, again, like, I don't wanna crap on up and comers in this business because there's a lot of them, and I appreciate you. I was I was you once. Birkett was you once. Reitman was you once. Proud to say that I gave a couple of these guys, Eric Schlitt and Mike Peyton. I gave them their first opportunities. And now they've done very well with it. I'm proud of them. I'm happy to have given that to them. But clickbait ain't the way to go. It just isn't. And, so many fake stories. We we did a thing about, actually, Joel Bantonio being invited to Lions mini rookie mini camp. And so but and, like, it was all over Facebook, and we dispelled that in a fun episode where we talked about how, a, the Lions don't have a rookie mini camp. B, Joel Betonia is a twelve year like, he has no he doesn't need to get invited to a rookie mini camp to try out. Like, please, please, please re especially on Facebook. You know, x blue sky, those of you that are on TikTok, that that isn't my bag. But, you know, I I do see some of that stuff out there. There's a lot of, like, pointless stuff. Like, view it with a skeptical eye. If you didn't see it from somebody whose name you recognize below a headline, you might wanna double check on that before you share it with, with all your friends and family because there's a lot of it, man. And I I I wish I understood the motivation behind it, but I just don't. Sorry. I don't. I don't get it. I don't wanna get it, frankly. Yeah. Fun times. Industry has changed quite a bit in the twenty plus years I've been in it. And some of it is definitely for the better, but some of it, not so much. The other thing that came out and I I wrote about this in the, the takeaways piece that I wrote at Detroit Lions podcast on that was on Thursday from the, the final OTA session. But I wanted to just throw a little bit more light on it here. And that was about Brian Branch and his injury status. And we talked about it, with Doctor. Liao. Great episode, by the way. Talked about that yesterday, in terms of his timeline and everything. But one part that came out, and it was the last question that Dan was asked. And he was asked, and the basic crux of the the question was, if Brian Branch's injuries affect contract extension talks. This is a good question because this is the time of the season, the off season, I should say, and the time in the contract. He's he's entering the final year of his contract as is Sam Laporta. They're both coming off of injury.

Speaker 4: This is the time of year where you tend to get these things done. Like, they're going away for vacation for a little bit with, you know, mandatory mini camp coming up this week, then they're gonna be out of the building. Like, this is a prime time to get little extensions like this done. You saw the chief did it with Patrick Mahomes adding eight void years. By the way, we are gonna have, Troy Chapman from over the cap, a former Texans friend of mine. He's gonna come on. We're gonna talk about boy years and Kirby Joseph contract and all the things that can be done around all that stuff. He's he's gonna be out in the next week or week and a half. We are currently working on a date, But Troy's Troy's very, very smart on all things cap related. And we'll we'll break that down because I think that's something that's an area to be to be straight. There are things in there that I don't understand, and I hope that he can explain them to me. And in the process, you will understand them better as well. But here's Dan's answer about if branches injuries affect contract extension talks. And you could probably throw La Porta into this too. Dan's quote, I think you always wanna know that your guys are healthy and that this is truly healed. You are always gonna kinda want to lean that way knowing the investment that would go into that. Folks, there's not any real way other way to read that other than we need to see him on the field before we pay him, which is prudent. Seems like a good idea. No? You don't wanna pay you don't wanna give a guy a truckload of money only to have him be hurt? We're currently going through that right now with Kirby Joseph. Now Kirby was not hurt when he signed the money, signed the contract. It's just unfortunate the way that it's happened, but you don't want to get burned. You've got a lot of money tied up in a lot of key players. The the cap is tight enough that you can't really afford to overpay a guy like like Branch or Laporta if they're not gonna be available. Like, you need outs. You need protection on it. And one of the ways that you can get that protection is by not signing them until you know that they're fully healthy. So, you know, to hearken back to what what they talked about earlier this off season and how, Dan talked about how they're not changing, they're evolving, This is another one where I think they are much more cognizant of, as a team, their their reputation and, really, their reality that they have taken a lot of risks on a lot of injured players, and it hasn't really worked out super well. And talk about Marcus Davenport, Levi Anzuriki, Josh Paschall. Obviously, we're dealing with Kirby now. There are a lot of players who, you know, they're trying to obviously, Peyton Turner's in camp. We'll see what he has. I thought Dan's answer about, like, well, it's nice that we we he looks good where we are now, but we need to see him in camp. That's the way to go with that. I like it. I I I feel better about them waiting on this even though that once branch does get out there and once La Porta does get out there and prove that he's healthy, the price tag's going up. Because right now, if you sign them, the advantage of signing them now while they still haven't proven that they're healthy You see, you can leverage that. You can say, oh, well, we don't we don't know yet. You know? So instead of, you know, x million per year, we're gonna give you, point seven x. And then maybe we can escalate it once you prove that you're healthy. And agents don't wanna do that. The players don't wanna do that. The players wanna look. The players wanna maximize their earnings as much as possible. Now there are different ways to do it. But the bottom line is is you don't wanna sign early and give away money. And by the lines doing this, they're they're sort of acknowledging, okay, you know, we will take care of you once you show us that. That that seems to be the message there. So look for that later this year. Laporta, because he should be should be should be ready for training camp. That one will probably come earlier. And I will reflect you back, if you wanna learn more about, the who gets extended first. I had Ben Solak from ESPN on, about a month ago. And he talked about extending branch versus extending La Porta, and others. And I thought his And Gibbs as well. And I thought his point on it was well taken. So go check that one in the archives.
