Speaker 5: Hey, everyone. Jefferson here with your daily DLP. It's a new week. It's the last week of actual football action until training camp, which starts in late July, but we have made it to Detroit Lions mini camp. And I will be there for the festivities on Tuesday and Wednesday. So this week's schedule, the dailies are gonna be coming at you later in the day because they will be post practice wrap ups. They might be a little bit longer. There's a chance, if I have time to do it and the, Internet bandwidth where I will be, we'll try to do a live show on Wednesday, just wrap it up and maybe take some questions and everything. If it does, then I'll try to post it on social media as well. But I wanted to give a little bit of an idea of what I'm hoping to look for this week. Mini camp, it's it's a little bit more expansive than OTAs and that it is mandatory. Everybody has to be there. You can't not that not that the Lions had any holdouts or anything, but, it's also a little bit different because it remember last year, the Lions canceled this mini camp. They, were playing in the hall of fame game, decided that that was, too close of a time period to have this, whatever you wanna call it, mini camp, which is still very limited in what you can do in terms of contacts, in terms of physicality, but it does get everybody there. All the coaches are fired up, and this is sort of the the send off for their summer vacation. And a few of the things that I'm gonna be looking at since it will be my first time seeing the 2026 version of the Detroit Lions in person. Couple of the newcomers, specifically newcomers who I think might have a, a bigger role than what might be expected by the average person in Lion's Land. And the first is this guy, Juice Scruggs. I truly don't know what to make of Juice Scruggs in Detroit as of yet. Because in Houston, where he played for a few years, he was a center. He was a guard. He was not good enough to start, but also, like, the starter that kept replacing him at one point or another, whether Andrews, whoever, wasn't, like, good enough to bury him on the depth chart either. With left guard and Christian Mahogany being the only real questionable starting spot and by the way, I don't think that's a question I think Mahogany is gonna start, but we'll find out. If left guard is the only spot that's open, you better believe Scruggs is gonna be involved in that. Ben Barch might be too if he ever gets healthy from his, from his Lisfranc surgery. But Scruggs is a guy who has some NFL pelts on the wall. He can move people for not being the biggest guy. If you remember King Kingsley and Guachen, who had been in Detroit for a couple years as an undrafted free agent, Juice is a little bit more of a, a little bit better of an anchor, just a kiss more mobile, but also more variable in his hand placement. And that's one of the reasons why he hasn't been around. So I'm I'm curious to see how he's responded to his early work with Hank Fraley as an offensive line coach. Sometimes different line position coaches can coax different things out of you. And, I'm curious to see what that's like with Scruggs. Another one that I'm gonna be looking at, who's a newcomer, I don't have a picture of him, unfortunately, is Greg Dortch, wide receiver. Again, we've talked about it several times on this show. We do not give Greg Dortch enough attention as Lions fans, as Lions media. This is wide receiver four y'all, and I don't really think that's up for grabs. I don't think that anybody was really gonna seriously challenge him. Now that could be a mistaken perception. I'll find out more about that this week, hopefully. But this guy, Greg Dortch, yards after the catch can turn a simple, you know, two yard swing pass, quick swing into a 12 yard run. But the biggest thing I wanna see, return man, his vision, his acceleration.

Speaker 5: Because he is first in line to be the next Cali Freeman. And Leaf was an all pro punt returner. Got got cups of coffee with the Lions as a kick returner too. George is gonna be there for all of those, and I'm I'm interested to see first off, I've heard from folks who covered him in Arizona that he's bigger than you think he is, even though he's listed at, like, five p. Like, okay. Sure. I haven't seen him in person since he played very early in college, so I'm curious about that. But, also, just how well he's clicking. If there's throws that are somewhat near him, can he extend his arms out and make himself bigger than what he actually is? I'm I'm curious about that. So I'll be looking for that. On that front, another guy that I've been asked to look at by a couple people in the Detroit Lions paid podcast Patreon Slack. Number 13, that's not Craig Reynolds anymore. It's Jackson Meeks. Undrafted rookie, wide receiver, converting the tight end, maybe. We're gonna see how that's progressing. If it's progressing or if he's working back at as more of a supersized wide receiver. But the lions do have a depth spot for that specific role, especially if it's a wide receiver because they don't really have anybody behind Isaac Tyslaw at that spot. Kendrick Law was maybe gonna be that, but with with his size, but he's up for the year. So curious as to where Meeks sits on the pecking order and how good he looks, how fluid he looks, after not seeing him for a year since he was on the practice squad a year ago. I get a lot of questions. There's a lot of comments that that come out about Jackson Meeks too. It's funny, and and I don't I really don't wanna rain on the optimism parade for these guys, but they strike me. He and Ahmed Hassanin, who I'll also be looking at, rookie last year. Everybody well, I don't say everybody, but there are is a significant portion of Lions fandom that has very high, aspirations for these guys, Meeks and Hasadin specifically, that they've never really shown any indication other than a couple of good practice reps that they could do in the NFL. And, again, I don't wanna I don't wanna, like, rain on that enthusiasm because, like, they're likable dudes, especially Hasidin, like, easy fan favorite with his attitude and everything and, you know, the way he plays, his his background. Like, yeah. It's easy to root for these guys. I will caution you, though. A lot of a lot of 53 man projections, and I will do one late this week and the next week, they're not gonna make that team. Hasselin is certainly on the roster bubble. Meeks probably on the wrong side of the roster bubble looking up trying to get into the bubble. That's the way I see it now. Well, again, that could change this week, but it it happens every year. Who's gonna be the star of the summer? And, you know, those two seem to be jockeying for it already. And, I hope to have a little bit more of an informed take on on who will wind up being that for the fans. But, it's, again, easy to root for both of those guys. I like them both. I actually think, honestly, Meeks, with his size, might have a cleaner path than Hasanin. Some of Hasanin depends on what we see from Peyton Turner. Because if Peyton Turner is healthy and anywhere close to the first round pick that he once was or high pick, but he once was with the Saints, guys making the team. This year's Marcus Davenport because he is so much of what they wanted Josh Paschal to be. Throwing these names out here of guys that didn't work out with injury problems. I realize that. That's certainly been Peyton knock on Peyton Turner as well. See how he looks. One thing I will say, and I brought this up actually when I talked about Hassani the other day. A lot of fans are just like, oh, we completely wasted everything on Marcus Davenport. What were we doing? Well, I will say, and I will give Davenport credit for this. Davenport was a willing mentor to guys like Hassanin and Pascal, guys who were, you know, trying to learn how to be pros and also, you know, deal with injuries. And Davenport, unfortunately, insert sticker here, he knew how to do that. And, in that vein, he there might be a spot for Peyton Turner to take over that role, Even if he winds up going on injured reserve, which I don't think would surprise anybody, and I I hate to be that glib, but that's where we are with these guys. If he was too healthy, Peyton Turner would still be playing in in New Orleans because they liked him a lot. They liked his potential a lot. Has been able to live up to it. Another guy that I get asked about a lot, and this also came from the the Slack channel, the DLP Slack, that's Makai Wingo. And you will see right there in that picture I can't even tell who that is behind him. But the fundamental problem for MacKay Wingo is that he's small. He doesn't have a position. I wanna see if he has a position and where he's at in that positional pecking order. Is he a super short but heavy end, Or is he an undersized three t that doesn't have enough like, the the leg thing is is a real issue for him. And the lions have tried to find it, and I'm hopeful that we will see something that indicates that they found a spot for MacKay Wingo as we enter another year with him. So this is again, easy guy to like. He's an LSU guy, so you know that Kelvin Shepherd who bleeds purple and and gold from from LSU. You know he wants to find a spot for for one of his tigers, it's it's gonna be that time with Wingo. Getting to be that time with Manu.

Speaker 5: Another one that we'll watch. By the way, I do expect to see him more at guard than tackle, but there's a crowd right now at both those spots. Juice scrubs is part of that mix. So those are some of the things that I'll be looking at over the next couple of days. Again, you won't get dailies from me in the morning like you typically do. This was delayed for for other reasons. But, one of the a couple other quick things that did happen around the NFL, gotta start with a sad one. Unfortunately, Alden Smith passed away. And I don't know if that has made a lot of ripples yet. But, Alden Smith, for his first couple of seasons in the league, was what Myles Garrett was in Cleveland, throughout his career. Aldon Smith was destined to be one of the great pass rushers, 33 and a half sacks in his first two seasons. And then substance abuse problems and legal problems got in the way, and it derailed his career completely. 36 years old, man. That's sounds like, there there's a great piece in the San Francisco Chronicle today on Monday about, his final hours, about how he was, you know, like, delivering pizzas to to help homeless people, you know, trying to do whatever he can to help people. And, it it's it's a terribly sad situation, and it it is a reminder. You know, we can be harsh. I can be harsh on guys that have personal demons off the field. And this was a nice little unfortunate reminder that they are human beings and they are people and that there were people that loved them. And there are people that are hurting right now because of that. And, that's it's very disappointing to see a young life lost, but also, you know, somebody that has such career promise. And, unfortunately, you know, basically threw it away, but was trying to regain some humanity, now that he's done with football. But rest in peace, Alden Smith. It's it's just that's a tough one. The other one, this is a little bit different, but this goes to the contract situations in void years. So we talked about Miles Garrett getting more void years. He has eight void years on his contract, y'all. We thought that Jared Goff was excessive with four, and the lines have put four on a couple other ones. I believe with has four. Don't have the details in front of me on the contracts. But the the lines love to use void years. Well, you can see where Brad Olms Gisner got it from because the Rams my god. Eight void years. His his on field contract, Miles Garrett, is done after 2030, but they will be paying him potentially. Now this is this is where the the void year negotiation comes in, conversation. They'll be paying him until he's 44 years old for this year. He's 31. Like, wow. Wow. Okay. It is what it is, guys. And that's this is the sort of thing. And and Patrick Mahomes also got void years. They added four void years onto his deal in Kansas City when they gave him more money. They didn't actually extend his contract at all. They just renegotiated the contract and put void years in. And like we talked about with what the lions do with it, it's basically getting your restructures done ahead of time. It gives you a whole lot of cash cap influx right now. But down the road, unless you can keep adding the void ears and you're willing to kick that can proverbially down the road, And the NFL, by the way, lets you keep doing that, and that might become an issue when you see the big stars like this getting those. And it's one way of looking at it, and I don't necessarily agree with this, but one way of looking at it, so these teams are maxing out a credit card that should have a limit on it. And you don't have to be a a personal finance major to know that that's a bad thing. And I do expect that the NFL is gonna start looking deeper into this and maybe curtailing how many void years and how much you could push things forward. We'll see on that, but, something to keep in mind. Anyhow, I'm off to Ellen Park for an operating base in Canton, Michigan, to get the next couple days over there. Looking forward to it again.
