Daily DLP: Week 1 film takeaways, PFF scores, rookies shine and more – Detroit Lions Podcast

The Daily DLP for Tuesday, September 15th looks at some of the broad-stroke takeaways from the Lions Week 1 win over the Saints. We also delve into the PFF team scores and grades, and offer what we can on the Joey Porter Jr. situation with the Steelers.

Detroit’s defense was dominant early in the game, but the Saints adjusted to the pressures and the spacing. New Orleans took advantage of some poor coordination in the Lions’ zone coverages. The pass rush from Skyler Gill-Howard, Aidan Hutchinson and others was still bringing it, but getting the ball out quicker and using their speed better helped the Saints light up the Detroit D regardless.

Gill-Howard was one of several Lions who stood out individually. First-rounder in 2025, Tyleik Williams had a whale of a game in the start of his second season in Detroit. This year’s first-rounder, Blake Miller, also performed very well in his first NFL game. The moment wasn’t too big for Miller. His injury status is a big detail to watch for when the Lions visit the Buffalo Bills on a short week this Thursday. Dan Campbell seems hopeful Miller will be able to go.

A review of the team’s overall PFF grades offers a broad view of how the Lions performed and how it compares to the rest of the NFL in Week 1.

We also offer an update on the Lions’ contact with the Steelers regarding Pittsburgh CB Joey Porter Jr., who is the subject of trade rumors as he seeks a new contract. Plus, a look at some of the ways the Lions can tighten up the ship headed to Buffalo.
