Daily DLP: Gibbs, Campbell 5th year options talk – Detroit Lions Podcast

Detroit locks in Gibbs, declines Campbell’s option

The Detroit Lions made their first major post-draft decision. With a May 1st deadline for picking up the fifth-year options on the contracts of 2023 first-rounders Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell, the Lions made their choices.

Per Dan Miller, the Lions plan to exercise the option on Gibbs and his contract. That will keep the dynamic running back on a Lions contract through the 2027 season. However, Miller reports the team will not pick up the option on Jack Campbell. That doesn’t mean the Lions don’t want him though.

Because of the way the NFL lumps all linebackers together, Campbell’s option value is astronomical. They will continue to work with the All-Pro on a long-term extension. Detroit can also do that with Gibbs, as well as the other members of the 2023 draft class. That includes safety Brian Branch and tight end Sam LaPorta.

Those contract talks for the second-rounders, who are entering the final year of their rookie deals, take on a different tone.
