Speaker 2: Hey, everyone. Jeff Risen here with your daily DLP. It is Wednesday, April 29, almost a week past the twenty twenty six NFL draft. We're feeling pretty good about what the lions have done. The draft grades are out. Talk about that a little bit, but there was actual lions news. We knew going in that, the deadline to pick up the fifth year option on the contracts of Jack Campbell and Jamir Gibbs is May 1. And as Dan Miller, voice of the Lions, friend of the program, frequent attendee for our, our training camp party. He's been to all but one of them. Dan, clearly at you know, with the the grace of the team behind him, tipped off that we are going to pick up the the fifth year option on running back Jameer Gibbs in his contract, but the Lions will not be picking up the fifth year option on Jack Campbell, and there's good reason for that. Start with Gibbs, though. This is, look. He's, if not the best running back in the league, one of the most dynamic, certainly, all the touchdowns, all the receiving yards, all the big plays. That's he's spectacular. He is the engine that drives the Lions' offense. When he is clicking on all cylinders, when he's hitting, you know, 10 yard plus runs, he's a really, really good team. He is effectively irreplaceable in the offense, and I wanna read the figure for it to bring up the Dan Campbell reading glasses here. Gibbs option is 14,300,000 for twenty twenty seven. Now he was already under contract for 2026 as is you know, that that's the fourth year. You have to pick up the fifth year option on first round picks before the fourth year, May 1 being the deadline. That's rapidly approaching. That's this weekend. Seems crazy to me that it's gonna be May, but here we are. That doesn't mean that the lions can't do a deal with him, but it locks him in 04/2027 at a rate of 14,000,000 little over $14,000,000. That is probably below his market rate. Don't think he doesn't know that. Don't think his agent doesn't know that. This is just a placeholder. I would be very surprised if Jameer Gibbs winds up playing that 2027 season under that, fifth year option. They did not pick up Jack Campbell's. And the reason why is because with incentives in it, first off, he's he gets gives gets this too. When you make a Pro Bowl, it automatically ups your option value. When you make all pro, like Jack Campbell did, it turns your option into the franchise tag value. Franchise tag is the value of the top five the average value of the top five contracts at your position. And he's an off ball linebacker. But the NFL and the NFL PA, in their infinite wisdom, have never fixed this stupid glitch that's been going on for a long time where all linebackers are lumped together, which means that Jack Campbell is in the same boat as Micah Parsons. And believe it or not, Miles Garrett can be classified as now they don't, but he could be because he's an edge. That's how stupid it is. Plays doesn't play the same position. He plays the position that, you know, plays that, you know, a lot of other good off ball linebackers place, and Campbell's one of the very best. He certainly ascended to that status last season. But that franchise value is let's see. And it was listed here. 21,900,000 for one year for an off ball linebacker. They're not picking that up. That's stupid. Why would you? He wouldn't expect it to be picked up. That's why we have been hammering for a long time, for months now on this show, and other people in the Lions media have as well, and they're right about it. This is where you get the long term deal done with Jack Campbell. And that price tag is only going up, so it behooves the lions and Campbell. Well, it behooves the lions more than it behooves Campbell. Longer he waits, the more he'll get paid. It's like real estate. You know? You you go by the comps of positions. Well, right now

Speaker 2: Long term? He can see, the issue with making it a long term instead of picking up the option as well, and I should have added this in, It's one year. It's fully guaranteed, and that means it is all that value on your cap for 2027. Why is the one heavy $21,700,000 charge for Jack Campbell on their books in 2027, that's untenable. If you sign him to a long term deal, let's say four years 85,000,000, Should will be the market rate. And, by the way, that is the basic if you make the franchise, the and the option value as the value for Jack Campbell, you just extend it out longer. Well, when you extend it out, there's a few things that you can do. You can choose how much to guarantee. It'll be a lot. It'll be high percentage. No doubt about it. You can you can play with the money that way. You can add void years. Spread that payment out. You know, it helps the Python get the deer down. You know, you don't have to swallow it all at once. You can wait for it to dissolve and amortize over time. And that's why they're gonna get a long term deal done. And they will I'm sure they will with Gibbs too, but that's not as pressing to get it done with him. Now the other two guys in that 2023 draft class, Brian Branch, Sam Laporta, they were second round picks. There isn't a fifth year option on second round contracts. So they are playing they're going into their contract years, the final years of their contracts. And we have talked a lot about and, again, this is not just the DLP and myself and Chris and Gray and everybody here talking about it. Like, this has been a a standard topic for lion's talk for a while now. We've talked about it on the huge show. And I've hosted the huge show. I actually did a segment on it, last summer. I did a segment on it. Did a long segment on it. The injury situation with Branch is a massive complication to this. Because you wanna get this deal done now, but you don't know when he's gonna be healthy. You don't know for sure that he's gonna come back full speed. He's never been the fastest guy. That's not no. That's not his game. He wins by being smarter, by being more physical, by being just quick, instinctive, all of those things. He loses half a step for a a season, he's not as valuable. And you have to factor in, you know, he he has had a couple of other it might like, nothing serious, but he's missed some time. He has been suspended. He has taken some bad penalties. He has unfortunately, he loses his head from time to time. That gets factored in as well. Back before the injury, when we were talking about his extension and the foursome of the guys who knew the extensions, I had posited that branch would be the last of the priorities to get done. And some of that is because he plays a more replaceable position as well. Now that doesn't mean that he's not great at it. You cannot just find another Brian Branch off the street, and they don't exist like that. It doesn't happen like that. But a nickel safety who plays the run really well, Not gonna say they're a dime a dozen, but there are more of those out there than and other there's more of those than there are all pro off ball linebackers. There are more of those than there are Pro Bowl tight ends of Sam Laporta's caliber. There's certainly more of those than there are of Jabir Gibbs. Yeah. So I wonder when if that branch extension will happen and how much it will be. Laporta, I do expect to get extended, and and it sounds like just in the early part of the off season when we got access to the team that they're working on that one too. Nobody seems to be all that concerned about his back injury, myself included. Now we will be I I'm actually, I have set up a time to record with doctor Jimmy Liao. This week, we are going to talk about all the injuries of these guys, like Branch and Kirby Joseph and Sam La Porta, the guys who are coming back, and what can reasonably be expected from them based on their injury stat I statuses. Stat I? Is that right? I should know that one. Sorry for the the gram the grammar police there. If I got that one wrong, put it in the comments. I do feel bad if I missed that too. I was one of those weirdos. I freaking love grammar. Like, eighth grade English class was all about it. Loved that.

For Laporta, his extension is gonna be a little more difficult to project because he did have the injury. But, again, it doesn't seem like it's serious. He and Gibbs are both gonna be looking at shorter contracts for their sec like, the days of the six year $130,000,000. Like, those those days are gone. Players don't want that anymore. Team sure as hell don't want it. Either depending on your point of view of it, either blame or credit Kirk Cousins. He cracked the code. Signing more contracts is better than signing fewer, longer contracts because you get paid more because guess what? That deal comes up and a straight cat just ran right in front of my window. So distracted. I didn't expect to see that. Made sure it wasn't my cat. It was not. Back to the show. This is why we do this in one take. It's fun this way. Think with with Gibbs, you're gonna be looking with the Saquon Barkley model where he got, what did he get? I wrote down here. Two years $42,000,000 or less than that. That's what Gibbs will get. So two years 42, three years 62,000,000, Somewhere in that ballpark is what he'll get. Hefty portion of that guaranteed, probably 75, 80% of it. Knowing the lines, they'll throw at least two void years on there, maybe three, just so they can swallow it over time with the expectation, which is done with most of these void year contracts, by the way. The expectation is is that they're gonna have another deal in place before we get to those void years, and they'll get wrapped into the next extension. If you don't do that, those void years are big time poison pills down the road. They are a crap ton of dead cap, And you can keep pushing it down and absorbing back in when you do future extensions. That's that's the goal with it. And I would suspect that that will probably be what happens with Laporta as well. And his figures will be somewhere in the 18 to $20,000,000 a year range. Again, two, three years. A lot of it guaranteed. Probably not nearly as much as what Gibbs is because Ty Den hasn't hit that status yet. And with but he's he's a good one. He's one to definitely keep. So that's what's going on in the world of Lions contracts. Thought we were gonna talk about the draft all day. No. No. There's other things to talk about. There's actually other lions ex lions news. It appears that DJ Reader, former lion's nose tackle, is signing with the giants. Couple of people have asked in recent days, hey. We didn't draft a nose tackle. Any chance the reader comes back? Well, I didn't think there was anyways. It felt like the lions had were at peace with letting him go, and he is, allegedly going to sign with the Giants. He might actually sign he might have signed already by the time you see this. We'll see. But, that was that was a rumored pairing before the draft as well. And now this is the time where street free agents, veterans specifically, veterans older veterans, more specifically, start to pick their spots. Michael Burton. Remember him? Twenty fifteen fifth round fullback. Made the lions, played here a couple years. He's bounced around a little bit. Sign a contract. He is with the Buccaneers now. Good for him. Got another contract. Never really did a whole lot in Detroit. He's blocking fullback, plays special teams, played two years here. Got another contract. Good for him, man. That's that's cool. You know, when when you go back and we're we're talking this is 2015 is, you know, a long time ago. You got eleven seasons out of a fifth round pick. Now I know they weren't all with Detroit. That's a draft hit. We don't necessarily like to talk a lot of positives about that regime back at that time. That's a good pick, man. Even if he hasn't done a whole lot in the NFL, he's still here. Good for him. Wanted to touch real quick on other guys who are out there, who have potential to sign, who are still unsigned.

Speaker 2: Not a lot out there, man. There just isn't. You know, you're you're looking at guys who weren't wanted enough to be signed before the draft. Could if you're if you're looking for a a a lion signing, probably gonna have to wait until training camp starts. Like, these guys don't wanna get locked in now unless the the Lions are making an offer that they can't refuse. I don't see that happening. I just don't. You could see somebody come in. They do have a mini camp coming in June. Maybe somebody comes in for a workout tryout then. They did try out, James Proche, former kick returner, punt returner, slot receiver. He was one of two wide receivers that visited the lions on was that Tuesday? Yeah. Tuesday. Haven't been signed as of yet, but it ties in with, you know, yesterday's show. We did a profile of Kendrick Law, the Lions' fifth round pick this year, who is very clearly on the team for his special team's prowess. And that there is a changing of the guard at return man. Greg Dortch is gonna get a certainly get a shot at the punt return, if not kick return. But Law will probably get a shot at kick returning. There'll be some other candidates as well. And if Crochet comes in, he would be one of them that would also fit in that. But they haven't signed him as of yet. More of a tire kick, see what's out there, make nice with the agent for something. That happens a lot. Talk about this every year. There's so much agent back scratching that goes on, specifically with the lower tier free agents for guys who have other people in their clientele who are higher priority clients on your team or free agents that you might wanna sign. That happens all the time. It's one of the first things that I learned, when I really started to cover this business was how much of that goes on. And and learning it from the agent side, I've done actually doing some work for an agent, not related to business, but, we talked about that. Like, yeah. He's like, yeah. I know I know they brought I know I know they brought player a in so they could talk to me about player b instead. Like, that happens all the time. So when you see those visits, and it's like, well, why the hell would they bring this guy in? Well, that there's a lot going on there that might not make a lot of sense on the surface. So don't know if that's the case in this specific instance, but that's where we're at. Tomorrow's show, we'll have draft grades, break those down.
