Speaker 3: Hey, everyone. Jefferson here with your daily DLP. It is Tuesday, June 9. I graduated high school thirty six years ago today. Wow. That'll, that'll wake me up. Anyhow, we are gonna have a focused show today. We're gonna devote our time today to Lions' undrafted rookie QB three, Lou Galtmeyer from Illinois because he's got a very real chance to stick around, not just for 2026, but beyond. More than other recent, QB three, QB four candidates have in Detroit. So, we're gonna we're gonna talk today about this guy. Oops. Number two. He's grown up some facial stubble since, since we saw him in Indy. Talking there with Tom Kennedy, and he knows in the background there is q b two Teddy Bridgewater. Great mentor. Great somebody who can teach Alt Meyer the ropes on what it will take to make the team in Detroit. Now the the first question you have to ask before we get into it all, what he can do, is will the lions keep three quarterbacks? Because that is not something they have typically done. And I'd be straight. I don't really expect them to keep three quarterbacks in the active 53 man roster. Now it's possible with the roster technicalities that you get where you can you know, he doesn't count as an emergency quarterback being active, like, from the from the practice squad elevation. I think that's that's where they're that's where they've gone in recent times with guys like Jake Fromm, Hedden Hooker. That potential is certainly there. But I do think that Altmire offers quite a bit of what the lions are looking for as QB three in 2026 and enough for him to have a chance, a chance if he earns it, and he can. I think he can. A chance to earn a job currently held by the number five in that picture right there, Teddy Bridgewater, who came out of retirement after coaching at Miami Northwestern High School's alma mater, did a very good job there. They've passed a law, recognizing his generosity of spirit, down in Florida. But, his his long term future is now with the Detroit Lions, Bridgewater. He's fine in 2027 or 2026 rather. Getting ahead of myself here. 2026, if he's QB two, you're okay. Now I will say and I've talked about this before. The last time we saw Teddy Bridgewater in Alliance uniform wasn't pretty. He looked done. Maybe the time away has rejuvenated his football spirit and helped him realize because he's a he's a bright guy. What he needed to do to make himself an effective backup quarterback for 2026 behind Jared Goff. And one of the things that appeals as Teddy is that he's a smart guy and he's an efficient guy who can operate from the pocket in the way that Jared Goff does. And that is absolutely who Luke Altmaier is. Showed it in his three years at at Illinois as their starter. And there's a lot of similarities between Altmaier's game and Jared Goff's game. Now I will not say any stretch of the imagination that Jared Goff needs to ever worry about Luke Altmaier pressing for his job. But when you're looking in the backup quarterback pantheon and what you're looking for as a team, you have to make decisions. Do you want a guy who offers redundancy with your quarterback? He can come in and run the same offense as your starter. Or do you want a guy who comes in and offers something completely different and you can change things and impact the defense that way? Allmayer is much more of the former. He can do what golf does at least to some extent. You can ask him to run the same offense in Detroit. And I think that that's a key because that's sort of where Bridgewater fits in. And as much as they tried to get Hen and Hooker into that, it it just didn't work, man. Like, I still I'm still disappointed by that because I like Teddy Bridgewater come out of the draft. But, it takes the player's desire to improve and ability to improve, and we just never saw that with Hendon, unfortunately. He was still making the same mistakes right before he got cut that he made when he first got here. And, you know, that that lack of progress, you know, upside is great if you can go get it. But if you can't go get it, if it can't be coaxed out of you, coached into you, it it it's not gonna help. Altmyer doesn't necessarily have that upside. I think he sort of is what he's going to be, like, physically already. And what what stands out about him, and I will go to what I wrote about him pre draft. This is from Real GM, where I do a lot of my draft writing. He was my QB seven, and I gotta pull out the readers here. Men of a certain age. I love that Dan Campbell, by the way, has made wearing reading glasses acceptable. I'm older than Dan, so I feel like I can I can get away with it? This is what I wrote pre draft. I wrote this in February. Luke Altmyer was my QB seven. He had a grade, and I'm a get into the grades and what they were in a second. He was my last draftable quarterback in this in this class. He was just behind Drew Eller.

But for those who are listening along audio only, my friends Jeff and Ria, my volleyball friends who we've recently reconnected with, Thanks for listening, and I'll read this for you. A gamer of a quarterback who plays better than the sum of his tools, Altmaier offers a lot of experience running a pro style offense and making NFL type anticipatory throws. Undersized and not blessed with dynamic athleticism or arm strength, Altmire wins with anticipation, accuracy, touch, and a willingness to stand to deliver under pressure. I'll stop there. Sound like someone you know? Sound Sound like someone you've watched in Detroit for the last few years? But Goff has a better arm for sure. But, the the qualities, the style, there's a lot of Jared Goff there. Alt Meyer can hit all the throws in structure, and he doesn't put the ball at risk often when things break down. Again, sound like golf? He does have a slower, lower release than desired. That's very un golf. Protecting himself needs to be more become more of a priority. Altmaier took two of the biggest hits I've ever seen a quarterback endure, and he routinely gets roughed up as a byproduct of his patience in letting downfield routes develop. That is his biggest area for development, I will add. And, that's something that, we'll we'll touch on that, but, that is an area that can get improved. We have seen players get better at that sort of thing. By the way, Jared Goff has gotten better at that sort of thing. Matthew Stafford got better at that sort of thing. We'll go back in the way back machine. Remember 2010, 2011? And we were having the conversations in Detroit about Matthew Stafford gets hurt a lot. He gets hit a lot. Is he is he gonna be able to, like can he can his body hang up to this sort of thing? You know? Can he learn to, you know, throw the ball away? Can he, you know, protect himself better? I think he's done a pretty good job of that over his career, both in Detroit and now with Los Angeles. He's still playing. He's 37 years old. Again, not expecting Luke Auburn to have any sort of career like that. The point is quarterbacks can get better at that sort of thing specifically. He also didn't play behind a very good offensive line at Illinois. That needs to be mentioned as well. It kinda came and went. There were he his line was better in 2024 than it was in 2025. Interesting how that works sometimes. And I wrote here to conclude all my earns the final draftable grade of the the class and is commissure with an end of day three rating. He projects as a capable backup option who can spot start a la Case Keenum or Jake Browning. The Keenum one was a deliberate one because Case Keenum has made a long career as a backup, reliable backup, despite not having very good arm strength. Now in the arm strength rankings, we're not talking about, like, Dylan Gabriel. He like like, Dylan Gabriel, who was the Browns third round pick in 2025, and who stands a very good chance of being cut this off season based on what we're seeing and hearing out of Cleveland, has an arm that like, he needs a full body heave to complete a 20 yard throw outside the the numbers. Like, that's just who he is. He just doesn't have that arm. Allmayer is not like that. This is not Kellen Moore to go back into a a lion's time where Kellen Moore was a brilliant distributor quarterback, but he didn't have to be frank, I don't know how he survived at I at at Boise State the way he did, but he made it work, and now he's now he's coaching. Always knew he would be a good coach. I think Altmaier will be a good coach in time, but at that time isn't there yet. As for what appeals to the lions about him, you're seeing it there. And I I wanna also I wanna hearken to the Our Lads guide, because I like these guys. They've been good to me. In fact, I use their grading scale. They do a zero to 10 scale. And on their scale, Luke Altmaier got a 5.87 grade from me, which is indeed a draftable grade. It I don't like to attach rounds to it because it sort of depends. Like, this coming year, a 5.87 might not be draftable for a quarterback. But last year, it was because it was a terrible draft. This is what they wrote in their piece. Our lads, good people. Check them out. Greg, the guys, they do a great job. David Simerson, good good experience NFL scout. And again, listen to this and think of Jared Goff. Three year starter, two time all big 10. Spent two years at Mississippi prior to transferring to Illinois and won the starting job. Finished his career second in program history in both wins and touchdown passes. Had a knack for playing his best late in games. Seven career game winning drives in the final middle of overtime led the nation during his career. This is where the golf comparison really gets in. Plays with a consistent level of poise and calmness, but maintains urgency and quick feet. While the level of talent in both his arms and legs will not rise above the others, he proves he can get the job done from the pocket. Has a clean game with good ball protection and overall decision making. Quick to process information and recognize holes in coverage. Adept at looking off deep coverage and progressing his way to what the defense allows. Will not rush things that for the most part keeps his harms out of keeps his throws out of harm's way. Maintains his composure and accuracy on the move in all directions. Y'all, that's that's basically what people wrote in in to some extent about Jared Goff back in 2016. Again, I'm not saying at all that Luke Altmaier is going to have this sort of career that Jared Goff is adding, but he doesn't have that arm. He does move a little bit better. So those of you who would like Jared Goff to be a little bit more mobile, you might wanna hitch your wagon a little bit more to Altmaier from that. Fun prospect, Eddie. Now this is what I like, and this is from an article that Dave Burkett wrote this week about Altmire. Dave did a good job with this. Rich Silva from the Detroit News also wrote one, that had a lot of the same quotes. But, when Luke Altmyer was asked, how he felt about going undrafted, sick to my stomach. It hurt, Altmyer said. I'm quoting Burkett here. It was very painful. It was almost torturous at times. And to see the picks go off the board knowing that that and expecting to get picked, it was difficult. Chip on the shoulder. We like that in Detroit. Taken now this is what Dan Campbell said about Altmire. And, again, these are things now Dan Dan's not gonna down talk about a guy that he's asked about. That's just not who Dan is. Dan's pretty blunt and honest, though. I think we can all agree on that. He doesn't lack confidence for sure. What we thought he would be at this point, I would say it's kind of held true. And by and by what I mean by that is, man, he's he's able to kind of retain the information we've given him so far. I feel like he's getting a little bit better every day talking about the processing speed of the quarterback. He's got a lot on his plate, but he knows what the calls are. He knows where the guys are supposed to be, the shifts, the motions, and that's good. For a young guy, that's really good. So we'll we'll we'll see when it gets really gets going. There's a quote down here from Drew Petzing. Every day, he's the same guy. He puts in the same process. He works. He never seems overwhelmed by what we're asking him to do or or how we're asking him to do it, and he's willing to learn and work at it, which has been great. Now that's important because one of the reasons that Altmaier chose to sign in Detroit was Drew Petzig. Talked about this earlier in the piece. That's also in Rich Silva's piece. He liked the idea of playing for Petzig. He also played under Lyon's assistant coach, Marcus Tuyasossoppo, at the Senior Bowl. He liked Marcus. Marcus played a role in getting Altmyer into Detroit. So all that is to say, y'all we we don't have any quarterback controversy. We don't even have a QB two controversy in 2026. But if the guys that they've had in in Goff's tenure, really, I like Altmaier's chances of sticking, especially as an undrafted rookie. He had a higher grade than all the players that they draft from me. He had a higher grade than all the players that they drafted on day three except Jimmy Rolder and Skyler Gill Howard. And that his grade is one notch below Skyler Gill Howard. So that was it's related with Skyler, but this is a guy who expected to get drafted. I expect him to play like somebody who should have been drafted. So he will be a guy that I am definitely looking at next week when I'm over at mandatory mini camp with lions and somebody that I will be watching very closely in the preseason, and you should be too because he's got a very real chance to be QB two in 2027 if he plays to the level of expectations that he's shown he has earned. So that's Altmire Day. Hope you all enjoyed that. Still can't believe that I've been out of high school that long. Fun times, man. It's a it's a nice rainy dreary day here in West Michigan. Hope to watch some, some college quarterbacks this year to see if there's anybody that we want coming up. I did wanna say one quick thing. Brandon Soresby, the Texas Tech quarterback, will apparently be the Texas Tech quarterback, and it didn't look that way. There's a whole can of worms. And Chris and I actually talked about it in our live show yesterday about the the the tentacles of gambling and poly market and and all that crap. This wasn't necessarily that. But Altmire I'm sorry. Brandon Soresby bet on games while he was at Indiana. This is before he went to Cincinnati. And while the NCAA declared him ineligible, and it was looking like he was going to be in the NFL supplemental draft, and we were gonna have to have an episode talking about, should the Lions draft Brendan Sorsban in the NFL supplemental draft? Well, now now a judge in Texas has put that on pause, and it sounds like he will be back in quarterback in in school in 2026. It's just college football has become something very, very strange and different, in the last three years from the time that Luke Allmayer got to Illinois from when he was Ole Miss. Like, it's changed so much. It's been so radical. It's, it's impacting the NFL draft when when guys can make more money staying in college, not and not just quarterbacks. Then if you can make more money staying for a fifth year instead of being a third round draft pick, second round draft pick, and that's true for a lot of guys. Yeah. It's it's altered a lot of things. So it's another reason why I actually thought that Altmaier would get drafted. Anyhow, that's today's show. Thanks for joining the day Daily DLP.
