Speaker 3: Hey, everyone. Jeff Risen here with your Daily DLP. It is Wednesday, May 13. Welcome to the middle of the week. Lot going on in Lion's Land for being in the middle of May. This is allegedly the quiet time of the year, but we've got an NFL schedule release going on. We've got undrafted rookies. We've got rookies signing. It never stops. One of the reasons why we do this daily. Gotta thank real quick. Thanks for last night. I went to the Jeff Tate show in Grand Rapids with my friend Ken and, met a couple other guys there, who I had met before. It was a great time. They did operation mine crime all the way through, which is just so good. So good. Sometimes you need to to get out and and recharge, and that that was very rejuvenative for me. So it it was awesome. Met some good people too. I had had fun lions talk, and it's always interesting when I meet people through mutual friends. And and Kenny and I have been friends for a long time. We'd go to concerts together. We we used to play basketball together. But he's always sort of like, you get one question, and I always to ask me about the lions. And, like, I I always appreciate that because, like, it it's I'm off the clock then. But I really liked the fact that, I was asked a great question last night, and the question was, where is the lion's window with Jared Goff versus replacing Jared Goff. And I thought that was a good discussion to have. So we're gonna get into that real quick before we get into the rest of the stuff because it's it's an interesting answer because I've I've gotten a lot of feedback lately, positive and negative on Jared Goff. And there's a lot of fans that are questioning if the Lions couldn't win with Goff as the quarterback between his salary, his relative lack of mobility and athleticism, and the fact that he's not had the best time in some big games in his career. I will say he's has had some good ones too. He was very, very good in the Super Bowl loss, but rest of the Rams team wasn't there with him. I'll say this, and the easiest way to say it is that Jared Goff will be the quarterback for the Detroit Lions through at least the next two seasons. Like, there's no question about that, and he can win with the team that he's got. If you give him a lesser supporting cast, I wouldn't be so confident. But with a bolstered offensive line with a new center in front of him who's not gonna be a turnstile, who can actually run block. We got Tate Rallidge coming into his own as a second year guard. The Christian Mahogany being healthy will help him if he wins the left guard competition, which who knows how that's gonna go. I think the line is better. I think that's gonna make golf better, and golf's pretty dang good already. He's good enough to win with what he had last year when he had an OC that didn't know what he was doing and was counterproductive. I think golf is certainly very, very low on the list of Lyons problems that are keeping them from winning a Super Bowl. If we get to that point, I'll be happy to reentertain that question. But, until then, that's my quarterback, man. Jared Goff. Jared Goff. How quickly we forget. Alright. Let's get into a couple things. First off, the schedule release, it comes out, I believe, tonight. I am one of those people. I really don't care, but it's a big deal, like, for a lot of a lot of folks, especially if you're going to games or planning travel to go to games. And if you're planning on traveling to go to Germany in November November November 15, you will see the Lions host host in Munich, the New England Patriots, the reigning AFC champs. The NFL decreed that that will be the game. That's a heck of a matchup. And we know from, one of our our lions faithful in the Patreon Slack channel from the DLP that the Patriots are very big over there. Like, they're popular from the time of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and, like, that has persisted. And now they're good again. I wonder how good the Patriots are gonna be this like, there's a lot going on there between the Mike Rabel, Diana Rossini stuff, the you know, who's gonna be their wide receiver? Are they trading for AJ Brown? Are they not trading for AJ Brown? Are they gonna have some regression because their offensive line is god awful, and they didn't really address it as well as I think a lot of their fans would like? They're going from a last play schedule to a first play schedule, sort of the opposite of the lions. They benefited greatly from that last year, and that's one of the reasons why I like where the Lions are at this year with the fourth place schedule.

Speaker 3: Seattle wrote it. Seattle miss missing the playoffs with a winning record doesn't happen very often. Seattle turned it into a a Super Bowl win. Let's go Detroit, but that that that'll be a fun one. That's that's gonna be a great game. Looking forward to that one. And, when we play the schedule game, I will probably probably pick the lions to win that one because I think the lions match up well with the patriots provided they can run the ball, and I think Detroit's gonna be able to run the ball. I think that I think that's gonna play very well. So find the rest of it out. I'm sure there will be more leaks. I had actually heard from a New England a friend who covers the Patriots, that they were planning on going to Detroit for Thanksgiving, and that wound up not being the case. It's one of the reasons why the leaks are unofficial. He was given bad information, passed it on to me. I've I put it in the Slack. I'm like, I look unofficial, don't know, don't really care, but at least one Patriots writer was planning on coming to Detroit for Thanksgiving. That is not the case. We'll we'll find out all that later. Lions had big day. Right after I posted yesterday's show, they made it official that they signed all of their rookies. Blake Miller, Derek Moore, Keith Abney, Jimmy Rolder, the whole draft class, and also the undrafted free agents, which were now official. And you have to be careful with the undrafted free agents because a lot of times agents will jump the gun on it, and they'll be so excited where, you know, my guy's going to Detroit. Well, till that till that ink is dry on that contract, they're not in Detroit, especially without the rookie mini cap. I thought I'd bring these guys up here. And these are the undrafted rookies. Allmayer stands out as the quarterback. And one of the questions that invariably comes up, and we play this game every year too, which undrafted free agent has the best chance of making it? And I look at this crop, the eight guys that are there. Altmire has a built in advantage in that he is the third quarterback on a team that might keep three quarterbacks. I I don't think they will, but he will certainly at least stick on the practice squad unless he's just egregious. I don't think he is. Like I've said in in a couple of the draft recap shows, I actually like the fact that he can run the Jared Goff fence. He's not Jared Goff. Don't make him to be Jared Goff, but they don't have to change the offense when he comes in. When Teddy Bridgewater comes in, you can you can do some different things with the offense, but there's also, like Teddy is not that pinpoint accurate dude over the middle. They they gotta change things up a little bit. So I I like that from a lion standpoint. He's probably the name that I would pick. I do like number 66 there, Eric O'Neil. Guy that I spotlighted in the first, an edge for every round deal, and it did did that back I think it was in January or very early February, coming out of Rutgers. And there's a lot to like with him. He struck me as a guy who, like, how does he not play for Iowa? You know? Like, you know, he had Max Lewellen, and Lewellen was a little bit more athletic, but O'Neil, you know, worked his way up from the FCS level, went from Long Island u to James Madison to Rutgers. Very productive, pretty good with his hands. A plate has good size, good length, decent enough athlete. His issue is is that he's very reactive instead of proactive as a pass rusher. He's going to beat you by outthinking you and outworking you, and that doesn't work nearly as well in the NFL as it does in college, even in the big 10. But I like his chances to stick. Look. They've had a lot of guys come and go in that position in that practice squad slash, bottom of roster weekly inactive edge. I think O'Neil can compete very strongly in that. The only other guys that I've really watched a ton of, I was I was not a priestly fan at Illinois. I just I love his I love his playing demeanor, but I don't think he was that great at playing, actually. Now he was a tackle. They're moving him in the guard. We'll see. Myles Kitsilman as a tight end is very interesting. Tight ends who have drop problems have a problem in Detroit. Hey.

Speaker 3: He has a massive drop problem. He dropped over 30% of the passes that were catchable thrown his way in college. Not one year, college. They make him into a fullback, teach him how to block, play special teams because that's that's key for any of these guys, the special teams other than Allmayer. That's, that's a tough one, but he can block. He absolutely can block, and I'm interested to see how that plays out. We'll see all these guys in mini camp, in about a month. I wouldn't buy any of these jersey numbers just yet, but, wouldn't be surprising if a few of these guys stuck around on the practice squad. And there will also probably be a couple that aren't even there when we get to training camp. That's just the way that the the UDFA world works. The rookie draft class, there's your jersey numbers for the rookies. Scather Gill Howard at 50. I like that. I like that number. It's a good one for a a a defensive lineman like that. Jimmy Rolder at 41, Abney at 28. I'm good there. Blake Miller, 76. You'll see nice bookend tackle. I like that one. And that brings up one last thing. Let's go back to the UDFAs. The guy who made it as a UDFA in Detroit back in 2021 called it a career yesterday. Friend of the show, friend of mine and Chris's, one Jerry Jacobs. Jerry came on our show very early on that summer. In fact, I did that interview. I was actually with my son at EYBL Peach Gym in Augusta, Georgia, and I did it in the hotel I did it in the hotel business center, and there was a dog trying to get into the business center the entire time, and I was scared to death. I think Jerry thought I was weird. Funny how things happen like that. But I remember going back to his rookie mini camp, and I I remember turning to to Ben Raven. We were watching him. Like, that guy can play. Like, he looks good. He wound up being a very good find for an undrafted free agent. He had about as good of a career as you can expect for an undrafted rookie on a team like Detroit at that time. I will pull up his stats here. I won't show them to you, but the guy played 40 games in three seasons, started 29, was a full time starter in 2023, his last season, before he got hurt, picked off three passes. Probably the best thing you can say about Jerry, he emphatically outplayed number three overall pick, Jeff Okuda, when they were teammates. And I know I'm look. I'm I've we've talked to Jerry several times. We know they are tight or at least they were tight. So I don't wanna cast shade on Okuda more than I wanna say Jerry Jerry did what he needed to do. And I look. He hasn't played in the league since 2023. I know he had he had mentioned something on social media late last year about trying to get back, which apparently didn't work out. I'm so proud of Jerry Jacobs for what he did in Detroit and for being the model for what the lions became. Grit, heart, aggressiveness, aggressiveness to a fault on the field. That was one of the reasons why, you know, he sort of fell out of favor a little bit was because he was so aggressive and it made mistakes at times. Again, to get a 40 game career with all those starts, decent decent career for Jerry Jacobs, and I'm I'm I'm happy to say that we were there at the beginning. And Jerry, if you're watching or if somebody gets this to you, you're free to come on with me and Chris anytime and recap your career and, you know, talk about being an undrafted free agent, what it means, and just give a recap of your career. We we'd love to have you. I'm sure the fans would love it as well. That's gonna be your daily DLP for today.
