Speaker 4: Hey, everyone. Jeff Rizzo here with your daily DLP. You made it to Thursday. Congratulations. It is May '28. You still live off of Farm Market Road 528 in Houston, Texas many years ago. We're gonna talk about Jack Campbell today because Jack Campbell talked to us yesterday celebrating his illustrious contract contract extension that will keep him in Detroit for a long time. Just really cool vibe with him. You know, he is he is exactly who he was when he got drafted. The success has not gone to his head at all. And I thought there was some really couple of really telling points from the press conference that when when Campbell talked. First was before he even got a question. Thanked a lot of people. Thanked his family, thanked his wife, thanked his wife's family, thanked teammates, coaches, thanked God. Like, sincerely appreciative person for everything that he has and everything that he's worked for. And then there's a quote, and I wanna bring this up because he was talking he was talking about how, he brought up how he was not necessarily a popular draft pick, and how someone from his hometown, or the town next to him send him a a clipping of the CBS sports report after, after the draft was done, where he, is listed as the worst draft pick ever. That's obviously very harsh and brutal, and I don't actually know who wrote that. I'm gonna guess that it was one specific person who's noted for not exactly liking lions, but okay. Whatever. It's like you know, coming out of Iowa, small town guy, lightly recruited, you know, wasn't seen as a guy who was gonna be a dynamic player. That's changed. But I loved his reaction to it. And he talked about and I I wanna read the quote here. He said it wasn't about proving them wrong, talking about all the the haters. I feel like for me, it was about proving the people who believed in me right. Damn, man. That's awesome. That is exactly what you wanna see. Look, there's nothing wrong with shutting haters up and proving them wrong. But when you are doing it not motivated by that, but instead motivated by the want and desire to prove you to prove the people that believed in you, to to prove to them that they were right in believing in you, that their faith in you was justified. Man, that's a different level. It really is. That's that's one of the reasons why Jack Campbell is special. That's one of the reasons why the lions paid him a lot of money to stick around, why he is the cornerstone building block of the middle of the defense. He earned it. He definitely earned it. Just looking at some of the the stats that he's done. Last season, he had a 176 tackles. He was fourth in the NFL. He was actually the 20 most tackles in a season in NFL history, which is pretty crazy. Going back to 1983 when they started keeping tackles as a official stat, He had, last year, five sacks, four PDs, three forced fumbles. He was the only linebacker in football to top three in all those categories. I get on Jack Campbell from time to time about his coverage, and he he did he still got Renewal approved there. But the fact that he got those five PDs says a lot about how much he's improved from being the guy who was chronically flat footed when he first got to Detroit. I'm gonna give and he did. Kelvin Shepherd and Sean Dion Hamilton as linebackers coaches in his times. First Sheppard, who's now the coordinator. Now Hamilton, who played with him actually as a rookie, gave him credit for helping him out. And that's one of the biggest things one of the biggest improvements that we've seen from Jack Campbell. So he's not flat footed. Like, it it's it it still happens from time to time. Like, everybody has bad plays. They do. But his are fewer and farther between than they used to be. By the way, he was on the field for all but four snaps last year on the Lions' defense. Durability. He talked about it in his press conference about how it was sort of a unwanted blessing that he had that he was healthy that first year when when everybody around him was hurt, and he was still out there. Talked about how that taught him to lead and taught him to, you know, take on more responsibility. He's guys, this is one of the ones that you wanna root for. Just that kind of person, the the holy positive, you know, looking forward is what you wanna see. Very happy for Jack Campbell. And I am really enjoying that people around the country are coming to the conclusion that he's a good football player, a really good football player. And, again, he's still got room to improve. I think there's still upside with Jack Campbell. I think he can get better in coverage. I think he can time his blitzes a little bit better. I think he can do a little bit more in terms of strafing when strafing laterally when blockers are getting out to him. And there's a chance that the blocking that the the defensive line in front of him without DJ Reader, without Roy Lopez there as true nose tackles. The blockers are gonna have an easier run at getting to Jack Campbell at the second level, and he's gonna have to deal with that. I think he will. I don't have a lot of questions about that, but it's still something that I need to see. You know, that's I think that's fair. He's become a great player, first team all pro. He earned it. Jack, congrats. Let's look at that contract. Those of you watching on YouTube, thank you for liking and subscribing. This is from Over the Cap, and this is Jack Campbell's contract details as we know it. As frequent readers and watchers know, when I got graphics on the screen, I need the reading glasses. Getting old beats the alternative. So, basically, the extension. And when you're looking at it here, it's a, four years, 81,000,000 with the, 51.15 guaranteed. 22.9 is fully guaranteed at signing. The new money guaranteed is 48,400,000. Campbell received an 8,600,000 signing bonus, and his 26 and 27 salaries are fully guaranteed. Now let's look at those '26 and '27 salaries. Base salary in 2026, 1,145,000. Base salary in 2027, 1,260,000. It goes up to 1,305,000 in 2028. Now there's a lot of like, the signing bonuses get prorated out. It's it's, you know, 3,600,000 this year. It's 1.722 dot dot dot, for the remaining four years of the extension. Option bonuses. This is where the lions are hiding some money. 2,378,000 option bonus goes up to 6.147 in 2028, seven over 7,000,000 in 2029, and over 10,000,000 in 2030. Roster bonus, workout bonuses, Guaranteed salary next year is 13,150,000. And that's gonna be the cap numbers. And I want you to look at the cap number, which is the numbers that are just to the left of the red. I know I know I know the graphics are small. I apologize. I can't pull this up any more than I already did. Cap number is just under 4,800,000 this year. It'll be 5.46 next year. Perfectly reasonable. Again, we talked about this earlier. When the lions do extensions like this, they save money in the short term. Now they push it down the road, but this actually frees up some cap room for 2026, should the lions wanna use it. In 2027, for that matter too. Now 2028, he costs 9,270,000. That's getting to be the area where okay. But then that $20.29 figure, and this is this is where it gets important. His base salary that year is $15,000,000. Cap hit of 24,100,000. Guys, he's never gonna play onto that. This contract is written the way it's written such that he will get another extension or a renegotiation after the 2028 season. That's that's just the way it's designed. So, look, I know the contract says it's five more years. It's done at '30 2031, and then also four void years tacked on. Again, we talked about this earlier this week. That void money being upfront like this, that is effectively the lions renegotiating the contract and squeezing all that juice out already.

Speaker 4: You can't you can't add on to that. You just can't. Now you can extend it out, and you will eat with that that extension that will come after the 2028 season. We'll gobble up a couple of those void years, and, hopefully, the gap keeps rising. Hopefully, you've got other players that are, you know, moving on such that you're you're financially and fiscally capable of doing it and keep pushing it down the road. That's that's the way it's gonna work. So don't worry about that 2030, 2031 figures. Everybody in this equation, you know, Mike Dizner from the Lions, Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell, Jack Campbell, Jack Campbell's representation, his family, they all know he's getting a new deal after the 2028 season, because it's financially untenable with all the other ones that are also going on in Detroit to pay him what he's what's on the books there for 2029 to 2030. So that's that's how these contracts work. I hope that you're learning more about that. I am getting a contract specialist on in the coming weeks, there there are a couple of other deals going on, and Sam Laporta's might be one of them that, I wanna lump in, to get in with that when when we talk to him. So speaking of Sam Laporta, we're at phase three of OTAs. Media access tomorrow. Unfortunately, I will not be there. I'm going to a different portion of the country, this weekend with my family, so I will not be at Allen Park on Friday. But we are hopeful that one, Sam Laporta, is spotted there because he wasn't seen in any of the pictures or media that the the the lion sent out from phase one and phase two. No. That's okay. It doesn't have to be. It's voluntary. Everything's still voluntary. Remember that. It's better if you're there. Like, you should probably have a decent reason for not being there, but it's voluntary. Can't be punished for not being there. But we wanna see Laporta be there because he had back surgery. And while everything I've heard and in talking directly to Lyon staff, they don't seem worried about it. They really don't. But I don't think I'm crazy in saying that this is the lions. Like, we're gonna worry about injuries. We're gonna worry about a back injury. Even if it was a microdiscectomy, which we haven't had it confirmed that that's what happened, but that's what doctor Liao believes what happened, based on the feedback that he's gotten as well. If that's the case, that's at most an eight to ten week recovery. If he had it in January, that was months ago. It's almost June 1. He should be, should be, fingers crossed, good to go. And I have a feeling that if he is there and participates and doesn't look like he's hindered at all, you could see a contract extension pretty soon for for Sam Laporta too. That's one of the many things that we'll be looking for to come out of this weekend and the subsequent OTAs and the mandatory mini camp. Do plan on being at that one. Wrote about those. Some of the things that were rattling around in my mind that I hope that we get resolution on in the coming weeks before training camp starts, Sam Laporta's status, definitely one of the big ones on that.
