Speaker 2: Hey, everyone. Jeff Risen here. I am on location from Orlando, Florida this week. Tuesday morning or Monday. Yeah. Tuesday. It's tough when you're on a trip. It's Tuesday, the twenty third. Yesterday was a travel day, sort of wipes everything out. But, a couple things did happen, while since I've last talked with you. First off, we know when training camp's gonna be. The NFL produced the list yesterday of all of the training camp report dates for rookies and veterans, and the lions are included. And I will pull this up. This is straight from the NFL's press release, and we spotlighted Detroit there. We get the lions rookies on the July 25. Today's June 23. So we got, what, thirty two days until the rookies get here. The veterans are required to show up on the twenty eighth. Most of them truly, most of them are there at least a couple days before that, to work with the rookies, especially the the team captains and so forth. Guys that, are fighting for jobs that tend to get there a little bit earlier, which makes a lot of sense. And then they don't have the first actual practice date yet, but normally, the day after the veterans report is the first practice. That doesn't mean the first padded practice. There are still restrictions on how often you can go in pads, what all you can do in the ramp up period. So I don't expect them to be in full pads probably until the third or fourth practice, but it's still we we now have a timetable for when, when everybody will descend back on Allen Park. Getting the I'm sure tickets will go on well, they they are free tickets for training camp, which I assume they're free. They always have been, for Detroit. But you will need tickets. It gets very busy. It's, it it it's an event. It's fun. If you can get to Alliance training camp, I strongly suggest you to do it. It's look, it's fun. There's stuff if you wanna take your kids. Rory is there. The cheerleaders are there. They got face painting. They got games. Need to sign autographs, you know, after the practice with several players. Some are very, very gracious with their time and will, you know, take pictures with you. Others will just, you know, sign and, you know, be good. But, it it's a great time to get to to feel closer to the team. And you do get to see a practice. Obviously, you can can wing it where it's gonna be a a padded practice. Unfortunately, we don't know that schedule for until, like, the week of. It's, it's a lot of fun to see. With no joint practices this year, it's probably gonna be a little bit easier to get access to because last year there were some Texans fans and there were some Dolphins fans who are local to Detroit who showed up. I don't have that issue this year. If you wanna crash other ones, Chicago's, which is in Lake Forest, Illinois. I was just by there yesterday, flying out of O'Hare. I gotta I go on that. That's they're also on the same basis we are. Cleveland is also, the rookies report earlier, but they start training camp on the same time. So I live in West Michigan. I live in Holland, Southwest side of the state, Southwest of Grand Rapids, and I drove to O'Hare Airport yesterday yesterday, more early morning. Now Hammond, Indiana, where the bears are fixing to move to, is on my way there. It is, and and we looked, we we checked it. It is 106 miles from where I live to the area that's sort of the proposed site for where I'm sorry, one sixteen to where we where the bears will be in Hammond. Made that part of the drive in exactly one hundred minutes, which is it took a little more time than usual. There's traffic coming in. If you're familiar with that area at all, where I 65 comes in and runs into to 80, 90, or 94, whatever we're on, of the one that's not the toll road. It's chaos. So from then to O'Hare, which is, you know, Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, very near the Arlington Heights site where the bears were allegedly going to move, which is only 41 miles. Ninety six minutes to go that time. So it was almost quicker from Holland, Michigan to Hammond, Indiana yesterday than from O'Hare Airport. And there are a lot of people that live well beyond O'Hare Airport who are Bears fans, Bears season ticket holders. I feel for them. I really do. It's just sometimes it's fun to poke the bear, pun intended, Have fun with that. So that's that's your training camp update, and we'll have we'll get more into, you know, the when the lines produce our actual schedule for it, around the preseason games.

Speaker 2: It's always fun. It does sound like we are gonna see the starters, at least most starters in the preseason, at least a little bit, and that is a change for this regime. Dan Campbell talked about that last week at mini camp, how, they wanna get ready. And I think one of the the prevailing themes this off season has been them looking back and self scouting what has worked and what hasn't worked or what hasn't necessarily produced the return on investment that they wanted. And that was one of the reasons why they did away with the rookie mini camp. It's one of the reasons why they did away with the local pro day. They felt like they just weren't getting enough out of it for the attention and energy they were putting into it. Was that a good decision? We'll find out. It's it is interesting though that they've they've chosen you know, one of the thing and I think we all know this. Last year, week one was rough. Starters looked rusty. They did not get ready enough in joint practices. Some of that was the fact that the joke the practice against my my God, the Dolphins were bad. They were so bad. Just look. I've covered the Lions. I covered the winless Browns. I covered some bad Texans teams with Bill O'Brien. I know a bad coached team. The Dolphins were as bad of a coached team as I've ever seen. And that might have something to do with why we didn't get a lot out of the joint practices because Mike McDaniel's a space cadet who has no control over his team. But given that, I do think that the Texans practice was intense, productive, but, the Lions have gotten away from that. They're not doing the joint practice. And so it comes to that. And I think the by product of that is getting them more into an actual game environment where like And in a joint practice, there are officials there. They aren't like running drills, but it's sort of coordinate a little bit. Like, okay. We're gonna run, you know, our first team offense. It's your first team defense. It's four minute drill. We're down by 10. Things like that, and we get the ball back right away. So it's not it's more like a controlled environment scrimmage situational type thing than an actual game. And I think it's good to play in a game. I have long questioned why none of the starters play in preseason. I wanna see rookies. I wanna see I wanna see Derek Moore out there. I wanna see Jimmy Rolder out there. But I also wanna see this new look offensive line out there in the preseason, especially with the no joint practices. So I'm hopeful that we will see that. The other thing that came out, and this is, this is the season, 'tis the season now that we're in summer and on break, for, outlets to come out with different sort of lists and rankings and all that. And ESPN, had all of their local beat writers. Eric Woodard is, the Lions beat writer. He's a good guy. Good, good. He he's I like Eric. Eric's good. To come up with the surprise player for 2026. And I chose this one, and I'm spotlighting this. We're not gonna go through all these, you know, minutial lists and everything. There's so many, and I do not miss creating them. Did that for nine years. I don't miss creating them. Did that for nine years. I don't miss that one bit. I, I'm down here for a volleyball tournament, and most of the most years, I spend three to four hours a day writing, you know, this player can be breakout, camp battles to watch. Now we're we're we're gonna do those, but there's a lot less urgency to have them done on a routine schedule. So I'm very pleased about that. It's nice to have free time. But for the biggest surprise player, Woodyard shows who I would choose. That may might be the reason why I'm spotlighting it as well. With apologies to Tyler Lacy, who I do think is making the team and I do think has a real chance for real playing time ahead of a couple of other people, who a lot of fans that are watching this probably had championed in Levi Anserike and Makai Wingo. I think Lacy is ahead of both of those, specifically because he plays and better than either of those. But we will see. That's one of the camp battles to watch. But the surprise player he chose, Eric did, is Isaac Tislaw, wide receiver. Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, go Seders. Special shout out to coach Scott Sodsma in his retirement from basketball. Incredible legend legendary basketball coach on the West Side of the state. Fantastic guy. He was very nice to my son when we competed against Unity Christian. We're in the same conference. And, But Isaac is indeed poised for a breakout season or a much more productive season. And as Eric writes here, six touchdowns on 16 receptions, He had 27 targets as a rookie. Is that gonna double? It can. Especially if the Laporta injury lingers. David Montgomery is not here anymore. And while the primary focus is on the running back and the carries going more to Gibbs, Montgomery was a very accomplished receiver out of the backfield, and he did get targets. Some of those might go to Toussala. I think I can see this offense going where they wanna use his size specifically. And I do think I think we're gonna see a lot more of, and this is gonna be frustrating for you fantasy football guys, but I think Tesla will have a week where he gets one catch for two targets on two targets, gets nine yards, and J Mo will get, you know, eight catches on 10 targets for 157 yards and two touchdowns. And then flip it the next week, depending on the matchup. That's much more true to what Drew Penzing is about as a coordinator and how this offense looks right now. So, you know, I think this law is gonna be a much bigger piece. Can you get 35 catches on 50 targets and six, seven touchdowns again. Do that for my daughter. Love you, kid. Fun having teenage daughters. Yeah.

Speaker 2: Tyslok can absolutely do that in this offense. Absolutely. I would be somewhat disappointed if he didn't, to be frank. He looks good physically. His legs have a little bit more meat on him. He can still go as the lions put out the video. He's going up and getting a ball that was well over his head. He's capable of doing all that. As as I said in the mini camp rap, he is bigger than Jackson Meeks who is transitioning to tight end. I don't know how you reconcile that for Jackson Meeks. That's more about him than Tesla, but the point is Tesla is a handful. I wanna see him still work on getting open quicker. His footwork off the line still needs work. His route running intricacies still need a little bit of work. Remember this this guy was a quarterback, in high school. So he's he's learning. The quarterback didn't throw it, by the way. Wings, single wing, triple wing option, all the crap. Yeah. It works in high school. You know what? We're I'm gonna have Russ Brown on. Russ does coach high school football, and I'm gonna ask him to to explain why those sort of gimmicky option offenses might not work in the NFL, because he will have a better grasp of that than I do. We've actually talked about that over beers before, but I want him to to do this. So look for that episode later this summer once he's done, taking his kid all over his country in football camps. His his son's a recruit. Good good good tight end prospect. Was recently at a couple of Mac schools. So, this is what Dan Campbell said about this last week. He feels like a veteran right now. He is consistent for a young guy. He doesn't get frazzled. I mean that mean this as a compliment. What he's done out there here here in this is in this spring phase two, OTAs and all that, it's just been very there's nothing flashy about it, and that's a good thing. And that is 100%. Isaac Tussloff, by the way, that's 100% West Michigan. Not very flashy place. People here well, there in the six one six let you know when they've done well, but they're not gonna they're not gonna do it with a lot of sizzle. And the guys that do tend to not bear well later. But that that's the slot. He's he's gonna be good. Again, I for fantasy football purses, I'm not a fantasy football guy. I I joined fantasy leagues, with my friends. So they're like, hey. I beat the football guy. I beat the football. Yeah. That's fine. Enjoy. Not that it's a different discipline. It's it's not real football. It's fantasy football. I'm not sure that I would draft him highly, but, again, he's gonna have weeks where he gets the favorable matchup more than J Mo does, more than Laporta does. Look, I'm on Raw. He's ridiculously consistent. He's gonna get his against everybody. And one of the things that I think, you know, the people who are down on the Lions and look, I disagree with you, but I think one of the things that gets lost is just how freaking good Amon Ra Saint Brown is. It's like we take him for granted sometimes. And I think there's a lot of fans that are sort of overlooking just how freaking good Amon Ra Saint Brown is. Don't forget about number 14. That guy can really play. He does it against everybody, against all coverages, against all types. He and Goff have a a symbiotic relationship that goes far beyond, you know, anything that that I've seen since Stafford and Calvin. Like, it is is ridiculous how in sync with one another they are, they're insanely productive. And they provide a very nice floor for the Lions offense. It's a much, much, much higher floor. Even with as bad as the offensive line can be. We'll be straight about it. I think they got better. We'll see how much better. I'm pretty optimistic about it. But, if you are a fantasy guy, like, let's say I'm playing fantasy football and I have the sixth pick, and I'm on around Saint Brown, sir, how am I taking? The fitness football experts amongst you. And most of them just probably like, that's what I used to lose all the time. Yeah. Could be. I think, guys, I don't draft players that I don't like. Up weird like that. Again, when you don't care about winning and losing, things come easier sometimes. Anyhow, that's the daily for today. We'll not have one tomorrow. I'm gonna try to do one for later this week, because there are a couple of things that are brewing behind the scenes. I am actually writing a 53 man roster projection, the draft. I have the positions all listed. I'm just figuring out who goes where. Look for those either Thursday or Friday or both. My split offense to defense there. Hopefully, we'll see if, Chris can do something, Gray can do something. I I know Bischoff and Brown have talked about firing it back up again.
