Jack Campbell Says The Lions Have To Win One-On-Ones

In the Lions postgame availability, Jack Campbell said the Detroit Lions did this to themselves after Carolina scored on six straight drives. Asked what is holding the defense back, he said he has to watch the game, then landed on it: “Just winning one on ones.” He said he is mostly frustrated with himself.

Not Finishing Drives

Aidan Hutchinson spoke first. “We got them in some backed up situations, and we’re not taking advantage of that,” he said. He called that the story of the first four games: really good at times, then not finishing the drive.

Campbell called it unacceptable. “We did it ourselves,” he said. He also said the Panthers quarterback did a good job making his reads, and that the Lions did not make their plays.

The RPOs

Hutchinson said the Panthers’ RPOs took the defensive line out of it. “RPOs kinda take the D-line out of it,” he said. The only way he sees the line affecting those plays is to fly up the field and ignore the run, and that is not how this defense plays them.

Reed On The Touchdown

D.J. Reed took the first-half touchdown on himself. “I put a lot of it on me on that touchdown the first half,” he said. “It’s not a coaching thing. It’s a player’s thing,” Reed said. “This game comes down to winning one on ones,” and the secondary has not been doing it.

Roger McCreary said they knew Carolina was going to its top receiver and still did not stop him. “We gotta stick together,” he said. Asked what Dan Campbell told them after the game, McCreary said the message was to stick together. They had the ball, and they had a chance to win it.

It Can Flip

Hutchinson brought up his rookie year, when the Lions were 1-5 and then won nine straight. He said it can flip.
