Dan Campbell Calls For Discipline Fix As Lions Face Defensive Struggles

At his Monday Lions press conference, Dan Campbell said the pre-snap penalties are on the coaches, and that it starts with him. The Lions are 2-2. He is not in panic mode. The next game is on the road at Arizona, and then the bye.

Pre-Snap Penalties

“It’s the penalties. It’s the pre snap penalties, the discipline penalties. We’re putting ourselves in a bind,” Campbell said. He said the Lions have to play smarter, and that getting the discipline cleaned up is on him.

“That’s on us as coaches. It starts with me,” Campbell said. He said the staff has to demand it. He thought they did that in camp, then did not get the same response on the road.

Not In Panic Mode

Campbell said he knows what 2-2 is, and he is not in panic mode. “There’s things we can do defensively that we haven’t tried yet,” he said. He is still looking at the roster, the practice squad, and the people already in the building.

“I do think we have a pretty good front,” he said. He said they got hit on a couple of runs they misfitted, and he still thinks the front is creating pressure.

All Three Phases

He said the Lions have to score touchdowns in the red zone. He named the penalties, the drops, and a busted run as the ways they are hurting themselves. “We gotta play much better complimentary football,” he said.

“We gotta be ready to win these games in the end of the fourth quarter,” Campbell said. He said that takes all three phases.

Branch And Rock Ya-Sin

Asked about Rock Ya-Sin and Brian Branch, Campbell said he is hopeful on Branch. The doctor has not confirmed it yet. That is the last thing they are waiting on, and he thinks it looks really good that Branch will practice this week. He does not think Rock looks good right now.

“You gotta put the work in, and you gotta do the little things right in practice,” Campbell said.
