Former Detroit Lions Running Back Tion Green Finds A New Team And A Favorable Situation

Tion Green signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. An undrafted free agent in 2017, Tion Green shone in limited opportunities for the Lions last year and was a fan favorite of last year’s running back group.

Following the signing of LeGarrette Blount in the offseason and the selection of Kerryon Johnson in the 2018 NFL Draft, Tion Green was released by the Detroit Lions.

For many Lions fans, including myself, it was disappointing to see a player like Green depart. At the same time, this is a good problem to have.

It has been a long time since the Detroit Lions have had enough depth at the running back position that they were able to release a talented back and still feel comfortable about the state of the backfield.

On the bright side for Tion Green, the Indianapolis Colts’ running back depth chart is wide open. The Indianapolis Colts are among the shallowest at the running back position in the entire NFL, and Tion Green should have every opportunity to compete for a roster spot, as well as meaningful playing time in the regular season.

The Colts selected Marlon Mack in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. After an up-and-down rookie season, the Colts decided to continue to add pieces to the backfield.

In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Colts added Nyheim Hines in the fourth round and Jordan Wilkins in the fifth round.

None of those three backs had high draft capital investment, and the team does not seem fully committed to any one running back. With three late-round running backs and at least a fourth running back spot wide open, it looks like former Lions running back Tion Green has a decent chance to make the roster and potentially bump some of the other young running backs down the depth chart.
