Speaker 4: Hey, everyone. Jeff Rouson here. Made it to June 1. Congratulations. Month where it officially becomes summer. It is meteorological summer. Those of you who followed me for a long time know that, I'm a weather junkie. Went to college to become a TV weatherman. Didn't work out, but still have a lot of fun with the weather. Every time I'm on the huge show, I still especially when I host, we devote some some time to the weather. Beautiful day out here in in West Michigan today. As I look out my window, and my neighbors are mowing at 08:34AM. As as such as it is, man, it's Waco's. Haven't been with you since the Lions OTA camp, was open on Friday. Did interviews with, Scott Bischoff and Scott DiBenedetto. Thank everyone for watching those and for the feedback on those. It was a good way to, to kick off into football and talk actual football because there's not a lot of football going on. And as much as I would have liked to have been at OTAs on Friday, I don't feel like I missed much, honestly. I was in Louisville for the weekend. By the way, just throwing this out there as a quick, like, travel advisory. Don't drive to Louisville on Interstate 65 or try to go through there anytime this summer because Interstate 65 is closed from the first exit in Kentucky past the convention center, past the airport. They're rebuilding everything. So you got a detour all the way around. It would be like if you were on like, if 75 was closed and you had to take 275 to 696 to get back on the 75 North go up to, like, Clarksville or something, if you're coming from from, you know, downriver or something like that, like, that's that's where they're at. So, just just don't go if you don't have to. A good time down there, though. Oh, fun fun little city. They have UFL fever. I know we're not getting into lions yet, but this because we're gonna have a guest on talking about the UFL, Emery Hunt is coming back on, once he's, off of his, trip that he's on. And he's gonna talk to UFL prospects. But, like, we don't have the Michigan Panthers anymore. But the Louisville Kings, like, they're drawing people, and there is legit, like, buzz as much as you can have for the UFL in Louisville. It was kinda cool to see. I didn't actually see any games while I was there, but it's, it it it's cool that that league seems to be going. That is something that Chris and I are gonna talk about when we go live at some point this summer, is the viability of a second league. I am working on getting somebody who's involved with the UFL, to come on. I don't know if he's gonna wanna appear on camera, but, maybe we'll get him for written interview or something. But back to the lines and back to Dan Campbell. If you watch Dan Campbell's presser on Friday, a little different. I'd say under caffeinated and more focused, more direct. And it was very clear that Dan was trying to set a tone of all business, you know, refocused energy, re, resetting everything. And there were a couple of quotes that Dan talked about, and I wanna bring there were there were a couple of them that that came up. And he said, basically where'd it go? I'm trying to read off their transcript here. He said if he found anything from his deep dive for this offseason, implement or omit this year. And it was sort of in in question to not have any rookie mini camp, and, you know, things being, scaled back a little bit different. They didn't necessarily have as many visits, pre draft visits, and things like that either. And he said, I think there are so many things that go into it there. It's not just one thing when things don't go the way you want them to. It's not just one, like, it's not just one player. It's not just one coach. It takes everybody to win, and it takes everybody to probably lose, unfortunately. But I do think, man, just getting back to a little bit of the no nonsense. And this is this is the part that I wanna focus on because this is the meat of the answer that says a lot about what the lions are. It's almost like a mission statement for 2026. Back to Dan's quote. It's a lot easier when nobody knows who you are. Talking about us as a team and all that because you kinda fly under the radar, but then the better you do, the more you do, the more hype, the more you're doing this, you're doing this. This player gets paid, this coach, this, whatever, this coach moves on, and now it's all of this other stuff that has nothing to do with what got us to that point that gave everybody. We all reap the benefits of that. It's just a little bit let's get back to that, man. Let's just get back to the business of what it's it's about football first and foremost, and it's about the guy next to you. That's it. That's it.

Speaker 4: Football purists are like, hell yeah. Yeah. This is what we want. This is the Dan Campbell focused energy that we saw in 2022 and 2023, building towards something bigger. You know, they I don't wanna say they flew a little too close to the sun, but they, they might have I think the hype got a little out of control for them internally. That's not where Dan wants to be, clearly. It's not that's not really his personality. You know? He's, he's he's fun. He's but at at his core, he's a football guy. And I think he feels like the team got away from being football for first and foremost, as he said. I think that's an interesting change. I and I I'm I'm personally excited to see how it plays out because I do think with the Ben Johnson departure, with Aaron Glenn departure, with, you know, this guy getting paid, you know, talking about all the extensions we just talked about. Had three shows, basically, of Jack Campbell getting extended, and all the the financial implications and, you know, how different it is running this team now. Now that you've got a bunch of high paid stars on the team instead of a bunch of guys who are trying to get to be to that level. It is different. It needs to be different. But keeping the same core principle together, I think, is important, and I'm glad to see them refocus on that. One of the other things that that Dan talked about and and, this is this is from a prior question. I'm scrolling up. On all the changes that have occurred over this off season. And Dan said, well, look. Some of it, as you guys know, they're every year, they become new challenges, obviously, between cash and cap as we all know. Right? So that's always gonna play into it. But I think it's when you've been able to hold a group together for a significant amount of time, and then you don't get the benefits you want or the results that you want. Excuse me. And then dot dot dot, basically. It's a new season. It's a new year, and there are a lot of things that will never change here that we're about, but there are gonna be things that we, yes, we evolve offensively, defensively, special teams. There's a lot that we can get better at. And really the most important thing is learning to work together, man. And the more you work together, the better you get at your craft. The more you trust the guy next to you, the confidence goes up, then winning goes up. Evolution versus change, good concept. That, I think, is a great point from Dan, and I personally like to see it a lot. Because they don't need to change what they're doing. They don't. It's been working Other than the injuries, some of which were lukish, but some of them, you know, they've evolved. Let's go to the draft for a quick second. This year's Lark project, Brad gets one every year. Last year was Isaac Gosselin. Year before that, Giovanni Manu had Broderick Martin in there. Simone Baki can be considered that maybe a little bit. But they always moved up with premium picks. This year, it's Kendrick Law. Played wide receiver at Kentucky. What should I say? Wind up as a receiver at Kentucky. Didn't actually do a lot of wide receiver things. He did some blocking. I will say from watching his film, the this notion that he is this tremendous blocker is based on two plays. He's he's fine. It it's not it's not something that he's bad at. It's not something that, like, you know, you're like, oh my god. He he can't block. But he had two really good blocks in, like, 10 games. Like, maybe chill a little bit on that. Yeah. But the point is, they traded day three picks to get another day three pick. That's not Brad changing who he is, but it's him evolving and understanding that you can't you can't spend that much capital on a project at this stage of your team's development anymore. He learned. Thank god. And I say that as somebody who really likes Isaac Tuslaw. I think it was a good pick, but they gave up a lot to get him. Didn't give up so much to get Kendrick Law. Could wind up being your punt returner, kick returner. Think you wind up being RB four as well. Like, who knows? He did play running back at Alabama. Not very successfully, I might add, but he did play there.

Speaker 4: it. Oh, no. I it's when you look and you see that Giovanni Manu is the fourth team tackle still? Broderick Martin's out of the league. He got waived with injured caused by the the Raiders. Nobody claimed him. He's out for the year already, basically, unless the Raiders wanna give him an entry settlement. Like, the cost of taking those risks, Brad evolved to his understanding to know. Because I'm gonna give him credit for that because I want I want to give him credit for that. And I think you're seeing with Dan here that maybe all the prime time games, all the glitz, all the lions going to Super Bowl preseason hype. I don't think he I don't think he wants to scale it back because I look. It's very clear this team knows they can be very good. They know they can win this next Super Bowl, but they wanted to change the mental approach to it. Quiet that noise a little bit. Get a little bit more insulated. It's worth the try. It's worth the evolutionary process. The offense is gonna evolve under Drew Petzing, probably in ways that people in Arizona would be like, how come we didn't do that here? I'll I'll I'll hearken back to to talking to Scott De Benedetta who worked for the browns when Drew Petzing was there. Like, one of the big things that they did with that offense under Kevin Stefanski, which is sort of the Gary Kubiak style wing of the Shanahan offense of precise spacing and timing. Forget about the personnel that are on the field. Everybody it's like a coordinated ballet almost, especially in your passing routes. I think we got away from that last year, and I'm excited to see us evolve back towards that. Now one other thing, because Dan did mention the guys who left. I think the Chicago Bears are in for an interesting challenge now that the hype seems to have gone down I '94 and over to Chicago. How will they handle that? I don't know. I'll say that I trust Jared Goff to handle that better than Caleb Williams, who's gonna be the cover boy on Madden. Got revealed over the weekend. A lot of weird things still happen in the NFL even when they've been dead of dead of summer. It's June 1. We're far away from football. A mini camp in a couple of weeks. I'll be there for that one. RSVP to the lines already for that one. So that's that'll be fun. Phoenix to get back over to AP for a little bit. But, I just thought that Dan's energy was deliberate in trying to set a tone. And I think that's Dan's personal evolvement. You know, he got asked about Levi Anserike and the injury, and he basically was like, yeah, he's he's here. We're happy. Like, didn't go into detail about it. No. He I remember when when John Panasini, remember him? Had the the the calcium deposits the size of softballs on him, and Dan, like, vividly described everything that was going on medically with him. Dan doesn't do that anymore. As a media member Deal. As a fan? Thank god.

One of the best things I ever bought off of an Instagram ad. Actually, my daughter asked me to buy it for me for my birthday. She's like, dad, does that school? You wanna see it? Okay. Yeah. Anyhow, evolution. It happens. It's happening with this football team. It's interesting that they're trying to evolve back to something. That's, an interesting way of of framing the evolution is getting back to something that you used to be. Get back to your core. I like the idea. I hope it works. I think it's I think it's great as long as they're winning. People will buy it. But if you know, the concept of, like, they're not really changing things. They're they're trying to evolve things into something bigger and better without necessarily changing who they are. That's a difficult balance. Because that's an acknowledgment from Dan that the team has failed in achieving what they wanted to achieve. Now there's nothing wrong with admitting that outside the world of football. In the world of football, acknowledging that what you've done hasn't worked, it's not good for job security folks. So for Dan to do this, I do think that it also indicates that the team there's a lot of talk, a lot of speculation out there that if the lions don't succeed this year and the metrics for success are vague and curiously undefined by the people who were espousing this, let's say this team goes seven and ten and finishes in last place this year, which makes me laugh, like, no freaking way. But I'll play along. Sure. Would Dan and or Brad be in trouble? I think the way that Dan has approached this off season and the way he's talking now about how the team hasn't achieved what he wants to, I think that's a really clear sign that Dan still feels very secure in his employment status. I can't speak for Brad on that, but I I still think they're a package deal. Think that Brad's evolution, that Dan's evolution together. I'll I'll answer it this way, and I'll close on this. When you're going to make a personnel decision to fire somebody, this goes back to the Jim Caldwell time, where I agreed with the lions that the team had achieved all it could under Jim Caldwell. Team the the players were the players were tapped out as far as they could get under Jim Caldwell. And the 10 men on the field, the dropping Ziggy Ansa in, like, infuriating decisions. Coaching malpractice as my old friend, and former Sunday morning co host Jim Costa, now at ninety seven one, used to he used to say it all the time about Jim Caldwell. And my counterpoint was okay. Like, I'm good for getting rid of him because I think they've plateaued. I I agreed with that. But when you make that decision, you've got to get the hire right. You've gotta have somebody in mind who you know you know is gonna be better. And we got Matt Patricia. For those of you who want seeming to want Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes to get run out of town, there are some of you out there. I don't like giving you all oxygen, but I'll I'll humor it. What's your next move? Who do you get that will go to Detroit? A team that hasn't ever made a Super Bowl. Team that has loaded with talent, but if you're getting rid of those guys, that means they've underachieved once again relative to talent and expectations. Who's taking that?
